This course (also called "The University of Tokyo Global Future Faculty Development Program" and represented with the acronym "UTokyo Global FFDP") aims to contribute to the educational development of future university teachers. Participants learn about teaching & learning methods and assessment strategies, how to enhance students’ active learning, how to design a syllabus and lessons with a learner-directed approach, and how to engage into the teaching profession maintaining an inclusive stance. The course emphasizes the development of a critical and scholarly approach to the teaching profession, inviting the participants to learn through reflection, discussion, and learning by doing. The course is based on flipped classroom; participants watch short videos before the class and in class discuss, reflect, and practice with their peers. UTokyo Global FFDP seeks to contribute to the training of future faculty members. To do so, it aims to: Promote professional & educational reflection, discussion, and critical pedagogical thinking. Contribute to the development of key educational & transversal competences to support learner-directed teaching-learning processes. Nurture a scholarly, evidence-based, inclusive & ethical approach to teaching to educational research. Provide learning by doing opportunities for a congruent educational development. Support a cross-cultural & global approach to the academic profession and to teaching and learning. Cultivate continuous development, lifelong learning, and community-building attitudes and opportunities.

The world is now facing serious problems such as conflict, food crisis, poverty and inequality, discrimination and prejudice based on class, gender, race, disability etc. In order to resolve these issues and realize a sustainable, diverse and inclusive society, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" were adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015. Education, in particular, is envisioned as a key to achieve the SDGs. Within this context, this course aims to examine the role and challenge of education in achieving the SDGs through exploring the initiatives taken by various actors (government, schools, corporates, NGOs, etc.) in Global North as well as Global South. This course will first introduce students to new opportunities and emerging issues seen from education in Global North and Global South (particularly, South Asia). Students will have the opportunity to interact with experts working in education through a field visit and a guest lecture in the middle of the course. At the end of the course, students will make a recommendation for a policy, system or practice for education in Global North/ Global South to achieve SDGs. ＜Objectives＞ By taking this course, students will acquire/develop the following new knowledge/ skills/attitudes ・understand how various actors in Global North/Global South engage with SDGs through education by exploring the new opportunities and emerging issues of education around the world ・enhance a sense of ownership towards global issues by gaining a deeper understanding of the interdependence and interconnectedness between Global North and Global South ・make a recommendation for policy, system or practice for education in Global North/Global South to achieve SDGs with a convincing argument ・recognize diverse values and perspectives through cross-border and interdisciplinary dialogues with peers of different cultural backgrounds and disciplines.

The course will involve a series of discussions among students following specified formats intended to maximize participants’ ability to learn and apply the following: -Skills for pragmatic, practical, intersectional approaches and multilateral solutions to global issues and challenges, especially in devising and evaluating policy proposals and alternatives. -Ability to assess, discuss, and debate global issues by leveraging multidisciplinary perspectives across public policy, economics, politics, ethics, security, international governance, and law. In addition to discussions, students will also develop skills in policy analysis, discussion, consensus building, effective presentation, and policy brief writing. The following is a list of themes: -Decarbonization, energy security and geopolitics, and the role of nuclear -The role of leading institutions and fair competition in global education in the era of digitalization -Challenges in progressing gender equality against the context of varying social vulnerabilities and inequalities across the globe -International leadership and the future role of international organizations

Worldwide, education systems face complex challenges to ensure lifelong learning opportunities for all. With Agenda 2030 off track, including Sustainable Development Goal Four (SDG4) on quality education, this course will identify emerging trends, gaps in evidence, analytical tools and governance models of the forthcoming global agenda for education policy and practice. There are two core learning objectives across the seminar series: a) assess immediate and long term priorities and analytical tools for education policymaking; b) develop timely knowledge products to transform lifelong learning systems in a specific policy context.
