グローバル教養科目（What's the Point? Love, Death, and the Quest for Meaning）
Students will explore and debate questions about human experience from multiple perspectives as they discover influential works from cultures around the world, both ancient and modern. Students will develop critical approaches and analytical skills as they exchange ideas with peers, ask questions, and respond to works in different genres through a variety of expressive modes. The course will focus on four fundamental themes: love, identity, death, and the meaning of life.

生命システムが満たすべき普遍構造を理論物理学の立場から議論する。分子、細胞、個体、生態系という異なる階層間での発展ダイナミクスクの整合性を指導原理として、複製、適応、発生、進化の普遍法則を追及する。人工細胞の複製、細胞の適応、多細胞生物の発生過程、人工的進化などの構成的実験をふまえつつ、複製系の統計法則、生命情報の起源、相互触媒制御による適応、発生現象の安定性、細胞分化の不可逆性、ゆらぎと進化の関係、遺伝子型―表現型対応の安定性の理論を述べ、生命システムを理解するための物理理論の方向性を議論したい。質問や議論を通じた積極的な講義への参加を期待する。
Through this course, we discuss universal features in biological systems with the aid of concepts in theoretical physics. Based on the consistency principle between different hierarchal layers including molecules, cells, organisms, and ecosystems, we study the dynamic behavior of complex biological systems. The topics include universal laws in replicating cell systems, an origin of biological information, environmental adaptation by complex reaction network, developmental robustness, irreversibility in stem cell differentiation, a relationship between phenotypic fluctuation and evolution. Active participation in the lecture through questions and discussion is expected.

Public Policy and the Global Landscape
The course will involve a series of discussions among students following specified formats intended to maximize participants’ ability to learn and apply the following:
-Skills for pragmatic, practical, intersectional approaches and multilateral solutions to global issues and challenges, especially in devising and evaluating policy proposals and alternatives.
-Ability to assess, discuss, and debate global issues by leveraging multidisciplinary perspectives across public policy, economics, politics, ethics, security, international governance, and law.
In addition to discussions, students will also develop skills in policy analysis, discussion, consensus building, effective presentation, and policy brief writing.
The following is a list of themes:
-Decarbonization, energy security and geopolitics, and the role of nuclear
-The role of leading institutions and fair competition in global education in the era of digitalization
-Challenges in progressing gender equality against the context of varying social vulnerabilities and inequalities across the globe
-International leadership and the future role of international organizations

国際研修 (The University of Tokyo Summer Internship Program in Kashiwa (UTSIP Kashiwa))
【注意】この授業は開講日程の都合上、成績が所定の確認日より後に公開される見込みが高いので留意すること。特に2年生は本科目の成績が進学選択が可能となる条件に含まれない見込が高いので、履修にあたっては十分に注意すること。
【注意】開講日程の都合上、この授業を履修する場合は、Sセメスター/ S2ターム開講の他授業を履修することができないので、注意してください（開講日程の異なる集中講義等を除く）。
Students attending this course cannot take credits for other courses in S semester or S2 term, except for intensive courses whose schedule does not overlap with this course.
UTSIP Kashiwa is an international internship program provided by the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences （GSFS:新領域創成科学研究科）where Junior Division students can study together with undergraduate students from abroad in laboratories as well as in lectures. The program will be conducted in English.

Do you enjoy watching good movies? Are you interested in global environmental issues such as the SDGs? If your answer to both questions is "yes", this course is for you! First, we will explore academic literature in the field of political ecology relevant to sustainability and the SDGs; then, we will put the knowledge gained into practice by watching (good) movies and discussing how the films that we as global citizens consume can help us understand environmental and sustainability issues, and in which ways our own personal perceptions and academic views on nature society links are shaped by the process. Concepts from political ecology that will be covered in the course include environmental justice, ecosystem services, nature contributions to people, ecological economics, de-growth, or ecofeminism, among others. This is a fun, rewarding course both personally and academically. To take this course you do not need to have any specific background (students across any arts & sciences fields are all welcome); yet students are required to take the time to diligently watch all the movies in whole, with a critical, academic eye. While some (initial) films will be chosen by the instructor, as the semester advances, students may propose films to watch and lead the follow-up class discussion about them.
