This lecture aims to help explaining and understanding the structure of international order and issues in international public sphere. The key concept for this understanding is globalization. Globalization of market, technology and international security closely knitting up states and actors to global arena, while political structure is geographically divided into 200-some sovereign states. Only these states have legitimate foundation of power to exercise its military, economic and legal capacities. The inconsistency between single global arena and locally divided political authorities requires new concepts and methodologies for analyzing international order under globalization.

The first objective of the course if for students to acquire conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of autocratization in current global politics. The concept of autocratization will be discussed and contrasted to that of democratization. Students will learn and discuss how autocratization is measured by leading independent assessing institutions (e.g. V-Dem, EUI, Freedom House). The second objective of the course is for students to acquire conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of the meanings, causes, and effects of populism as well as its historical and current character in various contexts. Thereby, students will be able to understand the role of populism, if any, in countries undergoing a reversal in the quality of democracy. The students will also develop the ability to assess different academic perspectives on populism and to independently and critically analyze populist rhetoric, as well as the social, economic and political conditions that promotes the growth of populism. The course includes and analyzes prominent recent examples of populist leaders and regimes, including tools they have used to come to power and keep it.

-The first objective of the course if for students to acquire conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of autocratization in current global politics. The concept of autocratization will be discussed and contrasted to that of democratization. Students will learn and discuss how autocratization is measured by leading independent assessing institutions (e.g. V-Dem, EUI, Freedom House). The second objective of the course is for students to acquire conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of the meanings, causes, and effects of populism as well as its historical and current character in various contexts. Thereby, students will be able to understand the role of populism, if any, in countries undergoing a reversal in the quality of democracy. The students will also develop the ability to assess different academic perspectives on populism and to independently and critically analyze populist rhetoric, as well as the social, economic and political conditions that promotes the growth of populism. For Raymond Williams, the distinguished British thinker, the concept of culture could broadly mean one of two things. Culture could stand for the entire way of life of a society with its beliefs, norms, sensibilities, practices and institutions. Culture also famously refers to the arts with their internal distinctions between high, popular, independent and underground streams. We will look into these different facets of modern and contemporary Arab cultures by focusing on how they reckoned with power as imperialism, colonialism, and post-colonial authoritarianism. We will do so through a variety of academic disciplines and works spanning different genres: memoirs, novels, films, theoretical tracts, music, histories, political speeches and ethnographies. How do these authors depict key historical transformations taking place in the Arab world? What are the different angles through which political questions are apprehended? How do these different works negotiate the relationship between Self and Other, Domination and Emancipation? These will be some of the central questions that will guide our explorations of Modern Arab cultures.
