広く産学官にわたってグローバルに活躍するために必要な「俯瞰力」を養成することを目指す。物質科学の各分野について最先端の知識を修得し、自分の専門分野と周辺分野がどのように関連するか、あるいはし得るか、について深く考察するために、第一線で活躍する講師の方々にその分野の最前線を概観していただく。さらに、それらの講義を通して異分野間のコミュニケーションを円滑に進めるための具体的方法論を学ぶ。 This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

This is a course on visual culture in the 20th and 21st century, with a particular focus on the interplay between media technology, culture and society. This course will also be multidisciplinary in nature, as we reflect on our discursive assumptions in the historical, sociological, anthropological, philosophical disciplines among others. While the readings may primarily cover phenomenon in the United States, participants will be strongly encouraged to think of the specificity of the impact of globalization on media and society in various regions of the world including Japan. The course objectives are the following: -Gain a better understanding of the relationships between society, media, people, institutions and how they function as agents of maintaining the status quo or for fostering change -Learn about the transformative faculties and social implications of quotidian applications of technology -Gain deeper understanding of the academic disciplines Topics will include (but are not limited to): -representation of race, ethnicity and gender and other minorities -regional, transnational and international ecosystems of information technology -artificial intelligence and algorithmic bias -technological advancement and implementation in everyday life and the powers at play

This course introduces students to the notions of sustainability in architecture and urban design within the Japanese context from the viewpoint of the cultural exchange between Japan and the World. The course covers four main learning outcomes. By the end of this course the students will be able to: - Interpret and explain the differences among different approaches to sustainability in architecture and urban planning. - Recognize the basic elements of traditional Japanese architecture and their relationship with the natural environment. - Describe the main aspects of the cultural exchange between Japan and other countries that have shaped the concept of sustainability in contemporary Japanese architecture. - Interpret works of contemporary Japanese architecture using different approaches to sustainability. Prior knowledge of architecture and/or urban planning is not necessary, but students enrolling in this course should be curious, proactive, and be interested in architecture. Students with all levels of English proficiency are welcome. Active learning, individual and group work, and in-class activities are essential components of this course; therefore, students are expected to be responsible for their learning and actively participate during class time.

<Day 1>: The rapid advancement of remote sensing technology such as passive and active remote sensing offers potential for revealing the spatial distribution objects on the Earth’s surface and forest management. This is achieved through the transmission, transformation, and processing of electromagnetic radiation information. In the intensive lecture on Day 1, students will learn the theory of GNSS (GPS) positioning and multi-modal remote sensing technology through a combination of on-site lectures and forest inventory attributes measuring field practice. <Day 2>: Remote sensing technology plays an important role in forestry studies and forest management practices. In the intensive lecture on Day 2, students will receive instruction on a specific type of remote sensing data operation and processing (e.g., backpack LiDAR equipment). The session will cover field data collection, data processing, and the extraction of forest attributes. Additionally, there will be a comparison of measurement accuracy with the field data collected on Day 1.

多様な差異を持つ人々が包摂される社会を実現することは、現代の重要な社会的課題となっている。また近年では、多様性=ダイバーシティ（性別、年齢、言語、身体特性等）の尊重のみならず、包摂性=インクルージョン（所属感覚、差異の尊重、民主的な意思決定等）の向上が重要であることが注目されるようになった。ただし、多様性の向上は必ずしも包摂性の向上を伴うとは限らず、また、多様な属性の差異によって包摂性の度合いにギャップが生じていることも指摘されている。こうした乖離を埋めるための実践として、ジェンダーやエスニシティに関わる意識的・無意識的な偏見の解消、障害のある人の参加機会を保障する「合理的配慮」や「バリアフリー」等、学校、企業、行政機関等様々な現場で、様々な取り組みが施行/試行されている。この授業では、集団や組織の「インクルーシブネス」を可視化する方法や「インクルーシビティ」を高める実践手法等を紹介し、その実施過程に潜む課題や問題点について議論する。
