Review of basic concepts in optical and infrared astronomy including telescopes/optics, imaging detectors, spectroscopy and data analysis. The use of optical and infrared observations in the study of galaxies, Active Galactic Nuclei and the interstellar medium will be presented. Class projects and assignments will be carried out using actual observational data. These assignments will be undertaken in groups to foster collaborative skills. Computer and data analysis experience will be obtained through use of the Python programming language. The lecture material will be supplemented with reading assignments from the astronomical literature that will be discussed during the lectures.
