・⽇本は、国際環境の激変と地政学リスクの拡⼤、デジタル技術の急速な進化と普及、地球環境問題、経済の停滞、財政の悪化、急速に進む少⼦化など、内外環境の激変に直⾯している。この状況は、⽇本の存続にとって深刻な危機であるとともに、古いシステムを刷新する機会でもある。この⼤局を認識する。 ・主要分野を横断して俯瞰する事で、各分野の基本構造とともに、分野間の相互連関を学ぶ。 ・国が直⾯する課題を⾃分事と捉え、⽇常の多忙の中でも内外の環境変化を注視していくことの必要性を認識する。 ・公共政策に様々な⽴場の個⼈がどう関われるか、そのような個⼈の取組を⽀える仕組みがどうあるべきかを考察する。

The purpose of this graduate course is to discuss Sustainability Science from Japanese perspectives showcasing various topics related to sustainability in Japan and other countries. Topics include natural disaster mitigation, aging society, biodiversity conservation, food security, pollution control, etc. Natural disasters, for example, are indispensable features to discuss human survival and sustainability, however, they are not fully elucidated in the context of Sustainability Science. Also, Japan is the first country in the 100,000 years of human history that is facing super-aging society. Japan’s experience in these fields should have great implications to disaster prone countries, rapidly aging countries and the emerging discipline of Sustainability Science. The course will also endeavor to add new implications to relatively more established academic fields like nature conservation, food policy, and coastal engineering by elucidating Japanese cases to expand the discourses of sustainable development in general. Nature conservation, for example, is largely expanding its scope in line with the notions of biodiversity, climate change and sustainable development. To protect the biodiversity and to achieve sustainable society, conventional conservation approach is not enough, and we need to include “people” in the policy and planning of protected areas. Understanding the diverse values towards sustainability is also a key component of this lecture course. Based on each local context, e.g. religion, culture, norms, history, geography, demography, polity, available resources and technology, possible solution and shape of governance would dramatically change. The students will be able to deepen the understanding of Sustainability Science by connecting this lecture course with the other compulsory lecture course “Proactive Environmental Studies I” which aims to teach the basics of Sustainability Science.

広く産学官にわたってグローバルに活躍するために必要な「俯瞰力」を養成することを目指す。物質科学の各分野について最先端の知識を修得し、自分の専門分野と周辺分野がどのように関連するか、あるいはし得るか、について深く考察するために、第一線で活躍する講師の方々にその分野の最前線を概観していただく。さらに、それらの講義を通して異分野間のコミュニケーションを円滑に進めるための具体的方法論を学ぶ。 This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

This course investigates the history of Japan from the seventeenth century to today. Students will study the major developments in Japan’s politics, foreign relations, society, and economy since the Tokugawa period. Moreover, students will learn how to critically analyze historical primary sources and to apply this knowledge to Japanese sources of different periods.

This course explores the role of law and governance in mediating the human-environment interface. It focuses on the Anthropocene as it confronts law and governance scholars with a unique challenge concerning the need to question, and ultimately re-imagine, international environmental law and governance interventions in the light of a new socio-ecological situation. Through interactive lectures, classroom discussions based upon pre-assigned readings, oral presentations, and the elaboration of a joint mini-project, students not only assess the (mostly unsuccessful and ineffective) regulatory interventions used thus far to mediate the human-environment interface; they also examine the possibility to develop counter-narratives and alternative institutional practices, by drawing on most recent critical legal approaches as well as sociocultural traditions that have been marginalised within international environmental law.

This course is a lecture series offered by faculty members of the University, and designed to showcase the wide range of research in Japan and/or East Asia. The purpose is to illustrate how fundamental concepts as well as knowledge learned in the junior division can lead to interesting intellectual explorations in the senior division of the PEAK Japan in East Asia Program. The scheduled twelve lectures are on cultures, societies and histories of Japan and/or East Asia. The lecturers of these classes are involved in three disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences: Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Area Studies, and Interdisciplinary Social Sciences.
