詳細を見る MIMA Search
This course is an opportunity for students to learn about photography and landscape along with the modern metropolis of Tokyo in which they find themselves. In this age inundated with Instagram, it aims to encourage students to slow down to think on photography both as an artistic medium and a tool for contemplation. And it hopes students will learn about Tokyo and improve photographic skills.

統合物質科学俯瞰講義II
詳細を見る MIMA Search
This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

New Dimensions of Security in the Risk Age
詳細を見る MIMA Search
COVID-19 has starkly reinforced how the world faces global risks, of which COVID is only one out of many. Why does the World Economic Forum publish its annual Global Risks Report and how does it arrive at its findings? And what are so-called “Existential Risks” that supposedly pose a risk to humanity’s very survival? As governments such as the United Kingdom issue National Risk Registers to guide policy makers, this module enables students to examine the security dimensions of living in what sociologists have termed a ‘World Risk Society’. It highlights the new nature of vulnerability in an era of contested and often politicised science, as well as the impact on how we conceptualise and think about security. The module shows how key stakeholders such as industry, media, governments and politicians have to play crucial roles in not only shaping responses to these perceived risks, but also how to appropriately manage them. Students will be introduced to how risks of all types have challenged policy makers in the post-Cold War era from ethnic conflicts in Kosovo, the 9/11 terror attacks, Afghanistan, Iraq and so-called Islamic State. Most recently so-called existential risks such as AI and climate change and systemic risks to critical infrastructure such as the Suez Canal have captured attention. Concepts such as Security Paradigm Shifts, Omission versus Commission; the Risk Calculus, and Precautionary Principle will be discussed. While these issues are not necessarily new in a historical sense, this module shows how they have garnered renewed attention through the prism of risk. Policy responses are finally examined such as capacity for building “futures literacy” and National Risk Assessment Exercises. The following outcomes are emphasized: 1.An ability to understand and evaluate a range of new security challenges and policy responses interconnected through globalization and technology 2.The linkage between industry, media, politics, and science and its relevance to global security affairs 3.The ability to collate and evaluate arguments from different sources and theoretical perspectives 4.The ability to formulate and articulate views coherently in written and oral forms 5.Critical thinking, analytical and reading skills

Exploring a New Global Governance in the Changing Geopolitical Dynamics
詳細を見る MIMA Search
The course will explore a new and emerging global governance amid changing geopolitical landscape. We are living amid the unprecedented change of the global order we got so accustomed to for so long time since the end of the Second World War. The fundamental challenges to the global governance are; First is the heightened geopolitical challenge. The US-China geopolitical rivalries expand to high-tech competitions for AI, Quantum Computing and Space Exploration, with semiconductors at the core of the competitions. The tensions between the superpowers have huge implications on supply chains resilience and business strategies of global companies. The War in Ukraine heightened risks globally and in Europe in particular. Second challenge is the power shift in the international political economy.Emerging countries such as India and Indonesia are now economic drivers of global growth and their voices in the global politics are increasing heard. In the meantime, the relevance of the Bretton Woods institutions such as the WTO is fading. Third is our existential challenge. Achieving net-zero carbon economy and society is common goal for every country but strategies for achieving the carbon neutral goal differ depending on specific situations of each country. The realistic roadmaps to facilitate energy transition toward the net-zero are required. The Pandemic also reminded us of the importance of improving public health. In this context, global and regional cooperation are urgently required. Fourth is supply chains resilience and rule-based international and regional economic order. The supply chains shock caused by the Pandemic and geopolitical tensions reminded us of the necessity to sustain resilient supply chains we have taken for granted for so long due to the success of the “Globalization Project", Bretton Woods System. Governments and businesses need to be prepared for the new economic realities. In these new global environments, in order to survive, we need to have acute sense and intelligence of what are happening in the globe and read signs emerging on the horizon. We also need historical perspectives. The course will look into a variety of aspects of global political economy, including US-China tension, energy security and energy transitions toward carbon-neutrality, changing power balance in the Indo-Pacific, entanglement of economic security with economic interdependence, digital economy and the international trading system, international environmental policy and risk management for global business. The course will also discuss how middle powers in the Indo-Pacific such as Japan, Australia, ROK and South-East Asian nations are reacting to the changing geopolitical environments in the region. The objective of the course is to help participants understand and analyze issues relevant to the today’s world in the geopolitical perspectives. For this purpose, I will invite top class experts on each issue. I presume the participants interested in this course aspire to chart their own professional careers in public service, international organizations, academia or global business and start-ups. My hope is to navigate the participants to think through their own choice for the future and prepare them with the basic perspectives and knowledge. The course will be structured; the first half of the semester will be dedicated to the briefings by the esteemed experts on individual areas. The second half of the semester will be allocated to the presentation sessions by the students participating in the class. Students can choose a topic relevant to the background mentioned above.
