文系と理系の歴史
本授業では、西洋の教育思想・教育制度に関する基礎知識として、西洋の古代から近現代までの学問観の思想および制度の歴史を扱う。授業は主に次の二つの部分から構成される。まず、日本では「文系」「理系」、欧米では「二つの文化」といった表現で知られる二元論的な学問観の歴史的形成過程を検討し、そのような学問観が実際の教育制度や研究政策とどのような関わりを持つに至っているのかを確認する。その上で、「文系」「理系」に関連する思想、制度の言説を扱った歴史的史料を実際に閲覧し、読み解くことを通じて、歴史的検証・解釈手法の獲得を目指す。

This lecture series provides an overview of what the academic genre of ethnography has achieved over the past century or so. Although ethnographic monographs have also been written by scholars of various disciplines, this lecture series focuses on sociocultural anthropologists’ endeavors. Rather than discussing the possibilities and limitations of ethnography abstractly, the aim of this course is to provide a perspective on what an ethnography have (and have not) accomplished, by discussing critically two or three ethnographic monographs, many but not all of which are in the context of Asia, each time, both locating them in academic and social contexts of the time and and relating them to various ongoing debates.

広く産学官にわたってグローバルに活躍するために必要な「俯瞰力」を養成することを目指す。物質科学の各分野について最先端の知識を修得し、自分の専門分野と周辺分野がどのように関連するか、あるいはし得るか、について深く考察するために、第一線で活躍する講師の方々にその分野の最前線を概観していただく。さらに、それらの講義を通して異分野間のコミュニケーションを円滑に進めるための具体的方法論を学ぶ。
This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

Information, Technology, and Society in Asia 225
This is a course on visual culture in the 20th and 21st century, with a particular focus on the interplay between media technology, culture and society. This course will also be multidisciplinary in nature, as we reflect on our discursive assumptions in the historical, sociological, anthropological, philosophical disciplines among others. While the readings may primarily cover phenomenon in the United States, participants will be strongly encouraged to think of the specificity of the impact of globalization on media and society in various regions of the world including Japan.
The course objectives are the following:
-Gain a better understanding of the relationships between society, media, people, institutions and how they function as agents of maintaining the status quo or for fostering change
-Learn about the transformative faculties and social implications of quotidian applications of technology
-Gain deeper understanding of the academic disciplines
Topics will include (but are not limited to):
-representation of race, ethnicity and gender and other minorities
-regional, transnational and international ecosystems of information technology
-artificial intelligence and algorithmic bias
-technological advancement and implementation in everyday life and the powers at play
