This course offers a descriptive, introductory overview of typical thermal and circulation structures of the atmosphere (mainly the troposphere) and ocean, providing fundamental knowledge that is necessary for understanding the mechanisms. In addition, the role of atmospheric and oceanic processes in the formation and variability of our climate system is discussed. If necessary, equations are used, but emphasis is placed on their physical interpretation rather than on their derivation.
