This course explores the culture, industry, and politics of the piano through interdisciplinary approaches and active learning. The piano is a musical instrument that originated in Europe and developed into its modern form through the technological innovations in the Industrial Revolution. The instrument has not only occupied a central place in the history of Western music but also played a critical role in the shaping of class, gender, racial/ethnic/national consciousness, identities, and practices around the world. In the second half of the twentieth century, East Asian nations of Japan, South Korea, and China have become major producers and consumers of the piano, and many of the world’s most acclaimed pianists in genres ranging from classical to jazz and electronic are Asian. In this course, we will examine the diverse meanings of the piano and its music for peoples and societies around the world, especially in Europe, the United States, and Asia. The topics include: technology, industry, and business of piano manufacturing and sales; evolution of piano performance and pedagogy; notions of pianistic virtuosity and (dis)ability; class, gender, and family formation through piano lessons; piano and its music as a tool of nationalism and imperialism; globalization and cultural hybridity of the piano; representations of the piano across cultural genres; piano and its music in the digital age. Through the course, students will: - learn to think of piano not only as a musical but also a social instrument - understand historical, political, and economic factors that shape the music industry and musical practice - understand various forms of empowerment and mobilization as well as exclusion, marginalization, and exploitation through musical practice - learn interdisciplinary approaches to the study of music, including American studies, cultural studies, disability studies, ethnography, ethnomusicology, history, law, musicology, and sociology The course will address the following themes of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 4: Quality education Goal 5: Gender equality Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth Goal 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure Goal 10: Reduced inequalities Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production

コンテンツ産業，メディア芸術，さらにはメディアコンテンツに関わる学術分野を俯瞰的に講義し，その将来像を探ります。各界を代表するオピニオンリーダーを招き，75分程度の講演の後に，30分程度のグループディスカッションの時間を設けます。

　本講義の目的は、メディア・技術と人びとの活動・実践とのかかわりについて、経験的に研究を遂行していくための方法論を考察することである。講義は、以下のように、【1】指定テクスト購読、および【2】参加者自身の論文（草稿）――メディアや技術、コミュニケーションに関連する学術研究――の検討を中心に進めていく。 【1】「メディア論」のテクスト購読 　メディア・技術と人びとの実践、あるいは社会との関係について、「メディア論」と（日本語圏で）呼ばれる知的領域は、様々な知見を提示してきた。本講義では「メディア論」的と呼びうるような論理構成を持つテクストを、 ①そのテクストが何について（対象）、 ②どのような資料・データに基づいて（データ）、 ③どのような方法意識をもって人びととメディアとの関係性を記述し（記述の方法）、 ④①～③を通してどのような「社会学的」な知見を導入しているか（社会学的含意）、 という点に留意して購読・議論する。 　「メディア論」と呼ばれる知的方法において分析の対象となってきたのは、いわゆるマスメディアや情報メディアに限られない。日本における「メディア論」の重要な機縁となった加藤秀俊・前田愛『明治メディア考』では――マーシャル・マクルーハンのUnderstanding Media同様――新聞から文具、博覧会、建築に至るまできわめて多様なものが、人びとの社会的生を成り立たしめるメディアとして捉えられていた。本講義では、まず、一見「メディア」と見えない対象を、人びとの社会的実践を組織化するメディアとして捉えるさいの「対象選択」の原理を確認する（①）。続いて、テクストが、その対象を分析する際に、どのような資料・史料に基づいて議論を組み立てているかを精査し（②）、そのデータに基づいて、人びととメディアの関係性をどのような「メディア観（メディアとは何かということに関する明示的・暗示的な理論）」「コミュニケーション観（伝達や理解をどのように捉えているか）」「共同性・社会観（メディアによって達成される集合性をどのように捉えているか）」（③④）を考察する。 　参加者には、事前にテクストを精読し、①②③④の論点にそくしてレポートを作成し、講義前週の金曜日までに提出することが求められる。具体的なレポートの書き方、様式については初回講義の際に指示する。 【2】講義参加者の論稿の検討 　メディア・技術・コミュニケーションに関連する講義参加者自身の論稿をとりあげ、協働的に検討する。その際も、【1】と同じく、参加者には上記①～④の観点に留意した「コメント」を用意することが求められる。

この30年あまり、デジタル技術やAI/アルゴリズムといった新興テクノロジーの日常生活への浸透を通じて、私たちのメディア環境は大きく変容した。そうした変容を踏まえたうえで、改めてカルチュラル・スタディーズの視座と理論を適応していく可能性を知るために、この授業では、カルチュラル・スタディーズの基本書、古典的文献、およびデジタルメディア時代の文献を改めて読み直して、新興テクノロジーが現在の文化と社会に何をもたらしているのか、1970年代にイギリスで生まれ、その後、世界的に広がったカルチュラル。スタディーズの方法を現代社会に応用していくためにはどのような読み直しと再解釈、批判的のりこえが必要であるのか、文献購読と討論を通じて考察することを目的とする。 Over the past three decades, the widespread integration of digital technologies, including AI and algorithms, has significantly transformed our media environment. In light of these changes, this course explores how the perspectives and theories of Cultural Studies can be re-applied and reinterpreted for the digital era. We will revisit foundational texts and classical works in Cultural Studies, alongside key scholarship addressing the age of digital media, in order to critically examine the cultural and social implications of emerging technologies. Through close reading and discussion, the course aims to consider what forms of reinterpretation, re-reading, and critical engagement are necessary to adapt the methods of Cultural Studies—originating in 1970s Britain and subsequently expanding globally—to the challenges of contemporary society.

美学・感性学の分野における重要な英語文献を講読し、知覚や画像をめぐる最新の研究動向を理解する。

インターネットが普及し、 視聴者のテレビ離れやテレビの影響力の低下が指摘されている 。しかし、ことはそう単純ではない。例えば、Netflix や YouTube などの動画配信サービスでは、テレビ由来の文化や様式が数多く模倣・流用されているが、その実態はこれまで十分に議論されてこなかった。この授業では、インターネットを経由した動画配信サービスの拡大を、テレビの衰退・終焉（「ポストテレビ」）と捉えるのではなく、テレビの越境・変容（「トランステレビ」）と捉え直すことによって、現代のテレビ産業、テレビ文化の拡張と再編の過程について考える。
