Introduction to Media Design
Media Design is an exciting and relatively new discipline within the wider context of design. In it researchers and practitioners are interested in exploring new ways to use and deploy digital media technologies to have function, communicate information or present artwork. Designers from a Media Design background often work on or with web design, e-books, data-bases, big data visualisation, smartphone applications, film, animations, digital imaging, art installations, technology products and many other artefacts and systems. Such designers create their ideas utilising digital or electronic formats and the intention is often that the work is created from scratch to be accessed on a digital platform. This course is a first step introduction to Media Design, it is not intended to be a comprehensive class but rather a short and intense introduction to some processes and skills and you may wish to continue your exploration of this discipline in other classes or studies. This is not a heavy lecture based course but rather a seminar, discussion, and hands-on practical class where you will do a lot of learning by doing. You will be working in teams a lot and each week there will be a subject to discuss, learn and try.

Case Study (Japanese Macroeconomic Policy: Solutions to Monetary and Fiscal Policy Challenges)
This course offers an intensive "boot camp" on the Japanese economy, combining basic concepts, current policy issues, and hands‑on work with Japanese economic statistics. It equips students with practical analytical tools, data literacy skills, and conceptual frameworks for understanding Japan’s economic structure and policy debates. By the end of the course, students will have developed a solid toolbox for analyzing economic developments, evaluating statistical evidence, and engaging in informed discussions on major issues in the Japanese economy.
The lecture will be delivered by a former chief economist of the government, with over 30 years of professional experience analyzing the Japanese economy and providing briefings on domestic and international economic developments to the Prime Minister and cabinet ministers.

Visualizing Japan in the Modern World
The purpose of this course is to examine how Japan’s transformation into a modern nation was shaped and represented through visual culture. Great emphasis is placed on group work, as students are expected to actively collaborate with peers to analyze visual materials, share perspectives, and co-construct knowledge. Through these interactive and cooperative activities, students will also have the opportunity to enhance their English communication skills and connect with a community of internationally minded peers.
この授業では、日本が近代国家へと変化していく過程を、当時の絵画や写真、広告などの「視覚資料」を通して学びます。授業では、オンライン教材やビデオ講義、歴史資料を用いながら、ディスカッションや課題に取り組みます。特にグループワークを重視しており、視覚資料の分析やプレゼンテーションなどを通して、学生同士が協力しながら学びを深めていきます。これらの活動を通して、視覚的リテラシー、歴史的思考力、異文化理解力を養うとともに、英語によるコミュニケーション能力の向上も目指します。国際的な視野を広げたい方や、英語を実践的に使って学びたい方に適した内容となっています。

写真表現実践演習
私たちは何かを見るとき、既存の枠組みの中で取捨選択し、見たいものだけを見ています。
この作業は無意識に瞬間的に行われるので、私たちは「ありのまま」を正確に見ていると思っています。
しかしながら、不要なものとして捨ててしまったものが、写真の中に浮かび上がることがあります。
それは、既存の枠組みが、断層のようにズレ動いた瞬間です。
その枠組みのズレを生じさせるもの、それが写真表現と呼ばれるものです。
そのズレは、新たな認識をもたらすのか、元の枠組みに吸収されなくなっていくのか、
そのうつろいを、冷静に観察してほしいと、皆さんに期待しています。
When we see things, we see only what we like to see with selections in the conventional framework.
This process is done instantaneously and unconsciously, so we think we accurately see things as they are.
However, in some photographs, we see what was thrown away as unnecessary stuff emerging on its surface.
It is the moment, I think, the conventional framework is slipped like faulting.
The energy causing the slip of the framework is so-called “photographic expression”.
The slip may cause a new perspective, or be absorbed in the conventional framework and disappear.
I strongly expect you to observe its transition inside of you meticulously.

メディア間翻訳・翻案研究：文学テクストの映像化・舞台化（９）
舞台・映像作品と言語テクストとの関係について考察を行う。
人文学のテクスト研究を、翻訳やアダプテーション作品の制作プロセスとつなげる学際研究および社会連携の可能性について考える。
大学における言語テクストを対象とした研究が、実社会での文学の映像化・舞台化など言語表現の枠をはみ出す多様な表現方法と必ずしも有機的なつながりを持ち得ていない。同時に、これまでの作品評価が原作をどこまで「忠実に」再現しているか、という同一性に偏ってもいる。映像・舞台化作品が、原作の言語テクストから自立した作品として成り立ちうる可能性について、その際に文学研究が果たしうる役割について、学際的な文化資源学の視点から、時にゲストを交え、討論を行う。
作品分析と合わせて、劇場という制度面についても考察を行う。
