Governance of Space Activities
This course aims to raise awareness on the critical role of space technology in our daily lives and the important implications it has on domestic policymaking and international relations.
The first part of the course, titled “Space and Society”, provides an overview of major space technologies and their applications. It then demonstrates how space assets have become a critical infrastructure on which advanced societies are over-reliant, and the hazards and threats that they are facing.
The second part of course delves into political science and international relations. It addresses the various approaches to space policymaking, the structure of international relations in outer space and the major challenges ahead for the space sector.
This course will be a part of the global effort to map threats and consequences for space sustainability conducted by the United Nations Institute of Disarmament Research.

This course examines Japan's foreign policy and its relationship with the world since 1945. The class will be held as a seminar, and active participation is expected. There are three underlying perspectives/themes throughout the class, which we will refer to during each session.

Visualizing Japan in the Modern World
The purpose of this course is to examine how Japan’s transformation into a modern nation was shaped and represented through visual culture. Great emphasis is placed on group work, as students are expected to actively collaborate with peers to analyze visual materials, share perspectives, and co-construct knowledge. Through these interactive and cooperative activities, students will also have the opportunity to enhance their English communication skills and connect with a community of internationally minded peers.
この授業では、日本が近代国家へと変化していく過程を、当時の絵画や写真、広告などの「視覚資料」を通して学びます。授業では、オンライン教材やビデオ講義、歴史資料を用いながら、ディスカッションや課題に取り組みます。特にグループワークを重視しており、視覚資料の分析やプレゼンテーションなどを通して、学生同士が協力しながら学びを深めていきます。これらの活動を通して、視覚的リテラシー、歴史的思考力、異文化理解力を養うとともに、英語によるコミュニケーション能力の向上も目指します。国際的な視野を広げたい方や、英語を実践的に使って学びたい方に適した内容となっています。

【注意】この授業は開講日程の都合上、成績が所定の確認日より後に公開される見込みが高いので留意すること。特に2年生は本科目の成績が進学選択が可能となる条件に含まれない見込が高いので、履修にあたっては十分に注意すること。
皆さんは「鉄鋼」という言葉にどのようなイメージを持っていますか。「鉄は国家なり」、「鉄は産業の米」などと言われるように遥か以前より国家・産業・社会の基盤となる重要なキーワードとして捉えられています。直近でも日米関係にも影響を及ぼしかねない経済的な動きが広く報道されているように、鉄鋼業は先進国における基幹産業であり、鉄鋼材料は過去から現在に渡って社会の基盤材料として活躍し、今後もその位置は変わることはありません。
本講義では鉄鋼材料の製造プロセスを学び、さらにその理解を深めるために、生産現場、つまり「製鉄所」を見学します。日本の製鉄所は100年以上の歴史と技術と先人の努力を蓄積し、世界随一の製造技術と効率を発揮しています。高さ100 mにも及ぶ「高炉」や1600 ℃以上の溶鋼が作り出される「転炉」、総延長1 km以上の「熱間圧延工程」など、いずれもテレビで見かけたことがあると思いますが、実際にそこでどのようなものがどのようにして作られ、そして最先端の製造技術が具体的にどうやって活かされているのか現場を通して学びます。
また、SDGsやカーボンニュートラル、サーキュラーエコノミーなど、鉄鋼材料製造技術の更なる発展に不可欠な観点で今後を概観します。
日本の製造業の根幹である鉄鋼材料を生み出す現場とその技術、そしてそこで働く方々の想いを一緒に学びましょう。

The ‘Global Course: Spatial Planning and Institutional Design’ is a joint taught course with top universities from different parts of the world. The original edition of the Global Course was a joint effort of Newcastle University, The University of Tokyo, Renmin University of China, the University of Washington and the University of Groningen, and it won AESOP’s excellence in Teaching Award 2018. We are pleased to present you a new version of the course for the academic year 2025-2026.
The Global Course is truly international, as the lectures are recorded and streamed at top universities on three continents. The group work allows you to collaborate with fellow students from around the globe. We promise to provide an intellectually stimulating environment to discuss the following two questions:
1. What are institutions and which historic, economic and cultural factors explain their existence?
2. How and why does the institutional context differ between the participating countries?
