グローバル教養科目(Sociolinguistics in a Global Society)
詳細を見る MIMA Search
Students are welcome to this class where we will learn about and discuss issues surrounding global society and language. Sociolinguistics explores how language and society are connected. It looks at how language shapes, and is shaped by, factors like identity, gender, ethnicity, education, class, sexuality, power, and culture. These are topics that both students and teachers have real-life experience with. In this course, we will share our experiences, thoughts, and opinions on them. Different languages and the social and historical backgrounds of the people who speak them affect how policies are made, especially as we work toward the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Because of this, it is very important to understand the role language plays in society—and how this understanding can help us reach our global development targets. For example, recognizing language diversity is crucial at a time when many populations around the world are vulnerable. Understanding their varied linguistic needs allows us to create inclusive policies that respect multiple languages and benefit everyone. By the conclusion of this course, it is hoped that you will have obtained knowledge of sociolinguistics and the role language plays in sectors relevant to global society through readings and class discussions. You will have ample opportunity to share your thoughts and opinions on these issues as we gain a collective understanding of how language will enable us to work towards the SDGs and navigate obstacles along the way.

グローバル教養科目(Collage: Art and Language)
詳細を見る MIMA Search
Haiku. Manga. Ramen. Sushi. Mecha. What they have in common, and what becomes the topic of this course, is their underlying form of presentation: collage. This Global Liberal Arts course will explore collage not only as an art technique but also as a common form of communication in our everyday life. It will introduce students to collage as a playful and strategic stylistic option in alphabetic text and multimodal composition. It will be a course where students study different kinds of collage and use writing across media to experiment, take risks, relax, have fun. In the spirit of UTokyo GlobE and the SDG of "Quality Education," it will make available to students analytical skills that facilitate discussion on contemporary social issues as well as useful strategies for composing knowledge and unpacking composed knowledge.

グローバル教養科目(Language Acquisition)
詳細を見る MIMA Search
Language is a rich and complex system that is unique to the human species and marks us as distinct from other animals. Despite being born without it, the vast majority of humans manage to master at least one language in their early years. Furthermore, it is possible that the majority of people speak more than one language (Cook, 2008). During this course, students will be introduced to several theories that attempt to explain how languages are acquired, both first (L1) and second (L2) languages. Students will also consider language learning in terms of specific skills, consisting of vocabulary knowledge, reading, listening, and speaking. Finally, students will investigate a number of differences between people and between language-learning settings that have been shown to influence the acquisition of these skills. In the spirit of inclusivity promoted by the SDGs, research involving non-English languages, including Japanese and Spanish, will be studied. By the end of the course, students will have a greater understanding of how humans acquire languages.

機械系応用数学(Applied Mathematics for Mechanical Engineering)
詳細を見る MIMA Search
The objective of this course is to brush up the mathematical skills required in advanced mechanical engineering through solving the example problems. Besides, solutions of partial differential equations are explained with the emphasis of the related physics. The methods using Green’s functions for nonhomogeneous differential equations are explained. Singular perturbation problems and renormalization technique are also explained as tools to obtain the approximate solutions. Furthermore, homogenization method, optimal design, structural optimization and sensitivity analysis are explained.

Mathematics for Public Policy
詳細を見る MIMA Search
This is an introductory course on mathematical methods for public policy analysis, designed for GraSPP students without a strong background in mathematics. Students from non-economics, non-engineering, or non-science majors are especially welcomed. The course helps students develop a solid mathematical foundation, enabling them to apply essential mathematical techniques to public policy issues. It is structured into four parts: 1. differential calculus, 2. linear algebra, 3. multivariate calculus and constrained static optimization, 4. dynamic optimization and linear dynamic systems.
