Many textbooks on condensed matter physics start from the itinerant-electron picture and explain the properties of metals, semiconductors, and insulators based on electronic band structures derived from the free-electron model or the tight-binding approximation. In this framework, atomic characteristics, such as orbital degrees of freedom, are often neglected, although they play an essential role in real materials. In this course, we begin with the localized-electron picture and study the fundamentals of electron correlations, crystal electric fields, and magnetism.
