This is a course on visual culture in the 20th and 21st century, with a particular focus on the interplay between media technology, culture and society. This course will also be multidisciplinary in nature, as we reflect on our discursive assumptions in the historical, sociological, anthropological, philosophical disciplines among others. While the readings may primarily cover phenomenon in the United States, participants will be strongly encouraged to think of the specificity of the impact of globalization on media and society in various regions of the world including Japan. The course objectives are the following: -Gain a better understanding of the relationships between society, media, people, institutions and how they function as agents of maintaining the status quo or for fostering change -Learn about the transformative faculties and social implications of quotidian applications of technology -Gain deeper understanding of the academic disciplines Topics will include (but are not limited to): -representation of race, ethnicity and gender and other minorities -regional, transnational and international ecosystems of information technology -artificial intelligence and algorithmic bias -technological advancement and implementation in everyday life and the powers at play

The class studies business/technical strategy and product development. Even though the first part of the class title says "management of technology..”, it will cover broader scope of business strategy since business and technology are tightly integrated today. We will first study the basic concepts of business strategy covering strategic positioning, organizational capabilities, and major strategy frameworks with examples. Then, we will look at key strategy frameworks in fast changing environment that has become critical in the current age. We will then shift our focus to product development, and will study basics of product development with emphasis on the evolution of product development processes and product lifecycle. We will then look at digital products and study the notions of product discovery and delivery that have become increasingly prevalent today. The class will close by looking at the implications of digital technology to major strategic frameworks studied in the class.

海洋技術環境学特別講義Ⅱ

本講義は、気候変動に果たす海の役割や地球温暖化の現状、海上交通が気候変動に与える影響など海洋に係わる環境問題を理解し、かつ開発と環境を調和するために海洋環境政策学、海洋産業政策学、海洋物理学、海洋環境観測学の基礎を学ぶことを目的とする。そのため、国際海運からの温暖化ガス排出削減や大気汚染防止等、国際機関で行われている条約策定と運用について、工学・経済学・法学的視点から解説し、国際交渉における意思決定メカニズムについて考察する。また、地球環境に影響を与えるエル・ニーニョ／南方振動（ENSO）、インド洋ダイポール、ENSO　Modokiなどの諸現象やそれらを再現する海洋・気候数値モデルについて解説する。さらに、北極海を主たる対象として海洋循環や海洋環境を観測する方法についても解説し、観測から得られた海洋環境変動に関する最新の知見について紹介する。また、海洋の利用と産業創出のためのビジネスモデルと政策について紹介する。注意：Behera客員教授による講義は英語、菊地客員教授、貴島非常勤講師による講義は日本語を予定している。 The lectures cover the following topics: - Introduction to the development and implementation of global　regulatory systems to control GHG　emission from shipping, from the　perspective of engineering, economics and international law. - Introduction to dynamical and physical oceanography, role of oceans in climate variations, El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), Indian Ocean Dipole, ENSO Modoki and modeling of ocean and climate. - Introduction to observational oceanography, Ocean General Circulation, advanced method of ocean observation, recent topics of oceanographic studies, mainly focused on the Arctic Ocean. - Introduction to the latest industrial policy to promote new business　models for offshore development. Note: The lecture will be given in English by Prof. Behera and in Japanese by Prof. Kikuchi and Mr. Kijima.

This course will start with a brief introduction to leisure studies as a discipline followed by the bulk of the semester spent on reading specific studies on leisure and media in the 20th and 21st century.
