(Japan As They Saw It)
MIMA Search
In this course, we will examine and discuss the impact of international tourism and travel on perceptions and representations of different countries and cultures. The starting point of our discussions will be “Japan As They Saw It,” an online anthology of descriptions of Japan in the 19th and early 20th centuries by visitors from the United States and Britain. We will assess how foreign tourists and residents viewed Japan and how they chose to describe the country to readers in the books and letters they wrote. We will then move to the present day and examine how Japan is presented to the world now by tourists and other visitors, particularly online and through social media. Through our discussions, we will attempt to develop a systematic understanding both of how different countries and cultures are perceived and portrayed by naive visitors and of the resulting challenges, including stereotyping, intercultural misunderstandings, and overtourism.

MIMA Search
This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

(The Gender Data Gap: exploring the lack of data about women and girls’ experience in life)
MIMA Search
This course explores the persistent challenge of gender-based data disparities and their far-reaching consequences for society. Across various domains, from health and education to economic participation and political representation, the lack of gender-disaggregated data hinders our ability to understand and address the unique needs and experiences of women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. Throughout the course, students will engage in discussions, readings, and a hands-on project that involves analyzing publicly available gender-segregated data. This will allow them to develop a deep understanding of the gender data gap and its implications, as well as practical skills in data analysis, visualization, and policy advocacy. This class will be taught in English and students will be expected to speak in English and complete assignments in English.

(Writing About Gaming: Game Studies as Social Practice)
MIMA Search
“Writing About Gaming” begins with the assumption that video games, like works of art, literature, and film, are worth writing about. Rather than debate whether games are “art” – whether they can be more than entertaining distractions from more worthwhile activities – we will consider what we as players and writers can say about them, do with them, and learn from them. Art can and does change the way people think, act, experience, and form communities. The perspectives that we will take together will be critical, exploratory, socially aware, humanist, inclusive, and creative. Games will be played in class. Collective and independent research, study, making, reading, interneting, focused recreation, unexpected detours, concept-mapping, and guided discussion will all take place.
