グローバル教養科目（Living a Good Life: The Philosophy of Well-Being）
What is for a person to live a good life, that is, a life that it good for the person? It is usually said that a good life consists in the happiness – or well-being – of the person. But what, then, is well-being? Philosophers have given various answers to this question, and raised challenges to the coherence or utility of the notion itself. This course will survey the major philosophical theories of well-being.

This course is designed for students who have already acquired very basic communication skills. The aim of this course is to help students acquire communicative skills, especially listening and speaking skills,
using basic knowledge of Japanese which is necessary for on and off campus situations.
Specifically, by the end of the course, students are expected to be able to
1) communicate in a simple and direct exchange of information on social familiar matters,
2) put their acquired grammar and vocabulary knowledge into use with well-balanced accuracy, fluency
and complexity,
3) express their own ideas and opinions effectively using simple expressions,
4) suit the manner of speech to the person, situation and topic properly,
5) understand basic words and phrases on familiar matters and understand the main ideas of a little
complex messages,
6) learn communication strategies through interaction, and
7) develop self-monitoring of language use and autonomous learning abilities.

This course explores the persistent challenge of gender-based data disparities and their far-reaching consequences for society. Across various domains, from health and education to economic participation and political representation, the lack of gender-disaggregated data hinders our ability to understand and address the unique needs and experiences of women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals. Throughout the course, students will engage in discussions, readings, and a hands-on project that involves analyzing publicly available gender-segregated data. This will allow them to develop a deep understanding of the gender data gap and its implications, as well as practical skills in data analysis, visualization, and policy advocacy. This class will be taught in English and students will be expected to speak in English and complete assignments in English.

本授業では、暴力という難解でありまた膨大な議論が多方面から行われてきたテーマについて、履修者各自が思考をするための手がかりを得ることを企図している。そのために本授業では、暴力を主題とする2つの文献を読む。1冊目として、文化人類学、政治学、歴史学など多方面から暴力について検討した基礎的な論集を読み、暴力とは何か、何が問題となっているのか、なぜ問題となるのか等について整理する。具体的には、日常生活における暴力、ホロコーストやルワンダ虐殺等の国家による暴力、組織犯罪による暴力等、様々な形態の暴力について検討する。次に2冊目として、暴力（特に女性に対して行われる暴力）と人間の苦しみについて検討した最重要文献の1つとして知られるヴィーナ・ダスの民族誌を読む。
