本講義では住民運動、市民活動、まちづくり等々を中心に、地域社会における現代的な課題についての実践活動を社会学の立場から考察する。それらの問題が現代の国家政策・地域政策の中でどのように扱われ、地域・コミュニティがどのような状況におかれているのか、さらに問題への取り組みがどのようになされているのかを理解してもらいたい。講義ではいくつかの事例を紹介するが、事例の中から論点を抽出するというのはどのような作業なのかも学んでもらいたい。具体的な地域問題から現代社会を読み解く力を養うのが本講義の目的である。／In this lecture, we will discuss practical activities regarding contemporary issues in local communities from a sociological standpoint, focusing on residents' movements, civic activities, community development, etc. We will also discuss how these issues are dealt with in contemporary national and regional policies, what the situation of regions and communities is like, and how they are addressed. In the lecture, we will introduce several case studies, and you will also learn how to extract issues from these cases. The purpose of this lecture is to cultivate the ability to read contemporary society through specific local issues.

1920年代日米関係の安定性と不安定性：満洲、移民、災害

1920年代から1930年代にかけての日米関係に関する歴史研究は、その重要性にもかかわらずまだ十分な蓄積がないフロンティアである。また1920年代にはワシントン体制の下で軍縮、国際金融、震災の復興を通じた結びつきが強まる一方で「排日移民法」のような火種があり、1930年代にも満洲事変への不承認主義が示される一方で日本側では英米可分論に立ったアメリカへの期待が根強く残るなど、戦間期の日米関係は全体として安定的だったと評価できるのか、それとも不安定だったと評価できるのか、十分なコンセンサスはまだ存在していない。この点は、戦後の日米安保改定や日米同盟に関する歴史研究がそうしたニュアンスも汲み取りつつ実証的にも理論的にも発展し、学界（少なくとも日本の）で一定のコンセンサスを築いてきたことと、対照的かもしれない。この授業では、戦間期国際関係史で近年注目される「国際主義」（internationalism(s)）、さらに「太平洋世界」（Pacific world）といった研究動向をふまえ、1920年代の日米関係について、先行研究、および日本側では『日本外交文書』と「外務省記録」、米国側では『FRUS』とRG59・84、といった史料を読み進めることで、日米関係史研究に今後貢献できる余地を探ることを目標とする。

To understand the mechanism how natural disasters are caused in the social system, and to obtain skill to analyze the mechanism, process and causes, so that he/she can discuss the mitigation strategy. It consists from two parts. The first part aims to learn basic knowledge about natural disasters as social events. - Factors and mechanism that cause disasters - Concept of Pressure and Release Model (at Risk) etc. The second part is mainly group work for the case studies.

The first objective of the course if for students to acquire conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of autocratization in current global politics. The concept of autocratization will be discussed and contrasted to that of democratization. Students will learn and discuss how autocratization is measured by leading independent assessing institutions (e.g. V-Dem, EUI, Freedom House). The second objective of the course is for students to acquire conceptual, theoretical, and empirical knowledge of the meanings, causes, and effects of populism as well as its historical and current character in various contexts. Thereby, students will be able to understand the role of populism, if any, in countries undergoing a reversal in the quality of democracy. The students will also develop the ability to assess different academic perspectives on populism and to independently and critically analyze populist rhetoric, as well as the social, economic and political conditions that promotes the growth of populism. The course includes and analyzes prominent recent examples of populist leaders and regimes, including tools they have used to come to power and keep it.

広く産学官にわたってグローバルに活躍するために必要な「俯瞰力」を養成することを目指す。物質科学の各分野について最先端の知識を修得し、自分の専門分野と周辺分野がどのように関連するか、あるいはし得るか、について深く考察するために、第一線で活躍する講師の方々にその分野の最前線を概観していただく。さらに、それらの講義を通して異分野間のコミュニケーションを円滑に進めるための具体的方法論を学ぶ。 This survey course is designed to enable students to develop the broad perspective that is required of global leaders working in and across industry, academia, and government. Students will gain knowledge and insight on advancements in each field of materials science research, given by leading researchers working on the frontline in those fields. This will allow students to consider how peripheral fields are related to their own area of expertise, and to consider the potential for forging bridges between related fields in the future. In addition, students will learn specific methodologies designed to facilitate smooth communication among different disciplines.

This course examines Japan's foreign policy and its relationship with the world since 1945. The class will be held as a seminar, and active participation is expected. There are three underlying perspectives/themes throughout the class, which we will refer to during each session. -Realist/Strategic perspective: The US-Japan alliance is supported by the public as the best way to keep Japan safe and secure, the “Plan A” for Japan. What does Japan need to do to keep “Plan A” viable? Or, should Japan need to consider a “Plan B” or some revisions to the “Plan A”? -Norms/Values perspective: I will discuss the four “values” inherent in Japanese foreign policy: pacifism, universal values, developmentalism, and Asianism. How do they change and intersect across time? To what extent do values matter? Are they shared by the public and reflected in policy? -Domestic Politics/Civil-Military Relations perspective: How do Japan’s foreign policy decision-making process and institutions differ from other countries? What are its historical origins, and how has it evolved?
