Students study through this course i) how economic policies have evolved since the demise of the Bretton Woods system in the 1970s, ii) what were impacts of Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s and the global financial crisis in 2008/09, iii) how Asian countries have achieved high growth and poverty reduction, and iv) what are new and emerging challenges for Asia and the World. Lecture is both theoretical and empirical, and based on the lecturer’s experiences. He is Chairman, Center for International Economy & Strategy. He was President of Asian Development Bank (ADB) (2013-2020), Vice-minister of Finance for International Affairs dealing with G7, G20, and IMF issues (2011-2013). He was engaged in many policy issues regarding tax, budget, and financial sector policy since he joined the Ministry of Finance in 1978. He was also an advisor in IMF’s Policy Development and Review Department (1994-97) and Minister at the Embassy of Japan in Washington DC (2005-2007).

森林は樹木と草本植物、動物、微生物が複雑なネットワークを作って共存する生態系である。森林は一見すると永遠に同じ状態でそこに存在し続けているように見えるが、実際には個々の樹木が枯死と再生を繰り返し（更新）、群落の構造や種組成自体も変化している（遷移）。森林生態系の骨格ともいうべき樹木の種組成は、地域レベルでは地史や気候によって規定された植物相（flora）によって決まるが、実際の森林群落の組成と構造は、地形、地質や撹乱の歴史を反映している。森林群落では、それぞれの樹種が、進化の過程で獲得してきた生理生態的特性に応じてすみ分けており、樹種ごとの生理生態的特性を知ることは、森林群落成立のメカニズムや森林生態系の機能の理解のために必須である。一方、樹木は周囲の動植物や微生物との相互作用の中で生きており、なかでも従来あまり重視されてこなかった菌類の役割の重要性が明らかになってきている。森林植物学は、森林生態系の成立・維持のメカニズムの基礎を学ぶことにより「森林を見る目」を身につけることとともに、関連する科目である樹木学、森林生態学、造林学、樹木医学などへの導入となることを目標としている。

ゲノム研究の進展により生命科学は仮説駆動型からデータ駆動型の科学に変貌しつつある。このような科学を推進するには、多種多様で複雑なデータや知識を計算機でうまく扱えるようにすることが不可欠である。本講義では、その基礎となる理論や技術について解説する。 With the advancement of genome research, life science is transforming from a hypothesis-driven to a data-driven science. To promote such science, it is essential for computers to be able to successfully handle a wide variety of complex data and knowledge. In this lecture, the underlying theories and techniques will be explained.

Statistics and biometrics have emerged as crucial disciplines not only in agricultural sciences but also in various other fields. This significance is primarily attributed to three factors: Firstly, advancements in data measurement techniques have facilitated the collection of extensive and diverse biological and agronomic data that were previously unattainable. Secondly, the evolution of data science methodologies has enabled the integration and modeling of such collected data. Thirdly, the enhancement of computational capabilities has empowered the utilization of these methodologies. These advancements have rendered statistical and biometric methods indispensable for extracting insights from the vast and varied biological and agronomic datasets. Throughout this lecture series, a diverse array of biological and agronomic datasets will serve as illustrative examples to demonstrate various analytical methods. Delivered in a hands-on format, utilizing R, Python, and Matlab, the aim is to equip students with practical analysis skills. The initial portion of the course, spanning the first one-third, will focus primarily on techniques for summarizing, visualizing, and modeling relationships within multivariate datasets. In the subsequent one-third, students will delve into linear models, linear mixed models, local regression, and nonlinear models. Finally, in the last segment, students will explore image analysis, machine learning, and deep learning methods. While the course will cover a broad spectrum of methods, ranging from introductory to advanced levels, the emphasis will be on developing the capability to independently conduct analyses rather than on elaborating on the theoretical underpinnings of the methods.

進化する事物や進化現象は、どのような性質を共通して持つか？　宇宙・恒星から生物、そして人工生命や言語・社会に至るまで、「進化」というキーワードで括れる広い現象の持つ本質はなにか？　そこにはエントロピーや情報の量と構造、そしてどのような質の変化や自己組織化が介在するのか？―――本講義はこれらを総合して、複雑系、非線形科学、数理生物学、進化生物学の観点から深く分析し、理解することを目的とする。
