In this course, we will explore a range of philosophical themes from a comparative perspective, approaching philosophy as a fundamental inquiry into worldviews and ways of life. We will also examine the educational implications of key concepts—such as the self, virtue, moral dilemmas, human nature, and the limits of language—and consider how these ideas can be applied in our own teaching practice. Through close readings of textbooks and scholarly articles on Asian philosophy written by English-speaking philosophers, we will engage with distinctive interpretations of Asian thought that draw on conceptual frameworks from Western philosophy. By critically reading and discussing these comparative philosophical works, students are expected to develop a rich and nuanced understanding of central ideas in both Eastern and Western philosophy.

This course discusses organizational economics, with emphasis on problems of incentive and information, at a graduate level. The aim is to provide a basic ground of economic research on organizational economics and to stimulate participants' research activities on organizational and personnel economics (including both theoretical and empirical works).

This course aims to raise awareness on the critical role of space technology in our daily lives and the important implications it has on domestic policymaking and international relations. The first part of the course, titled “Space and Society”, provides an overview of major space technologies and their applications. It then demonstrates how space assets have become a critical infrastructure on which advanced societies are over-reliant, and the hazards and threats that they are facing. The second part of course delves into political science and international relations. It addresses the various approaches to space policymaking, the structure of international relations in outer space and the major challenges ahead for the space sector. This course will be a part of the global effort to map threats and consequences for space sustainability conducted by the United Nations Institute of Disarmament Research.

[Overviews] This course covers the introductory microeconomics to students who are not majoring in Economics. It provides key concepts, economic ideas, and a framework for learning about microeconomics. The course places primary emphasis on the role of market, and then analyzes the role of government in the market.

The knowledge of biomaterials is critical for the creation of novel medical devices. The purpose of the course is to systematically study the properties and characterization of basic materials used in the conventional medical devices, including metals, ceramics and polymers. In addition, the design principles of biomaterials for applications in various advanced medical devices (artificial organ, medical diagnosis devices, drug delivery system (DDS)) will be examined.

This course confronts philosophy's most profound questions about the human condition with data-driven insights from modern behavioral science. For millennia, philosophers have used reason and introspection to ask: What is knowledge? What does it mean to be moral? What is love and happiness? How to deal with human violence? How to be free? What is the self? In this class, we will place these classical debates about the human nature/condition in direct conversation with cognitive psychology, behavioral economics, and social/evolutionary psychology. We will explore how far science can answer philosophical questions. <<Learning Goals>> - Identify and articulate key classical philosophical problems in epistemology (knowledge), ethics (morality), and metaphysics (self, love, free will). - Explain core concepts from behavioral science, such as dual-process theory, cognitive biases, moral foundations theory, and affective forecasting, while reasoning about major philosophical inquiries. - Analyze how empirical findings from behavioral science challenge, support, or reframe traditional philosophical arguments. - Critically Evaluate the limits of both "armchair" philosophical reasoning and purely descriptive scientific data in addressing normative ("ought") questions. - Synthesize insights from both fields to develop more nuanced and empirically-grounded positions on complex human issues.

The purpose of this course is to examine how Japan’s transformation into a modern nation was shaped and represented through visual culture. Great emphasis is placed on group work, as students are expected to actively collaborate with peers to analyze visual materials, share perspectives, and co-construct knowledge.
