Governance and Development
The objectives of the course are: 1) to give students a historical understanding of the context of the rise and fall of major development theories on which donors have based their aid policies; 2) to deal with the ways in which current international development cooperation takes place in the areas at issue - with the primary focus being placed on ‘governance’ amongst them; 3) to provide a critical assessment of the ways in which the concept of ‘governance’ is framed through international development discourse in general and development aid in particular.
By the end of the course, students will be able to understand firstly why a certain theory was emerged at a certain point of history and why it was adopted by donors, and how it was turned into their aid policies. Secondly, students will deepen their understandings of the impact of implemented aid policies on recipient states’ governments and societies at large - i.e. the governance of recipient states. Thirdly, students will be able to follow up emergent ‘unorthodoxies' that challenge the dominant discourse on governance and development in the international aid industry.

This course is to study how to be an excellent leader in an international environment (International organizations, multi lateral agencies, international non profit organisations.... ). We learn leadership with a combination of basic principles, self reflection, feedback giving and receiving from others....). Warmest welcome to anybody who wants to unleash potential and be an exemplary leader in your profession as well as in your own life. The course is based on discussion, role plays and presentations. Students taking this course for credits must attend all lectures, participate actively in classroom discussion, present a draft term paper on topics related to the course, and submit the final version of the term paper.

Global Financial Market, Institutions, and Regulations
This course provides a unique opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of global financial regulation and international policymaking and market development. It blends theoretical foundations with practical experience in rule and policy formulation, guided by Prof. Kawai, who has led an international financial regulatory body for over 20 years and now heads an ASEAN+3 initiative to strengthen financial resilience in the region. The course includes lectures, student presentations, and discussions, welcoming those eager to explore international financial policy and its real-world applications.
Students taking this course for credits must take part in all lectures, participate actively in classroom discussions, present a draft term paper on topics related to the course, and submit the final version of the term paper.

Liberal Arts for Advanced Students III
This course explores key concepts and conceptions in political philosophy that are relevant to contemporary societies. Our societies are often not well-ordered, allowing even the unreasonable to hold political power, even in so-called "liberal democratic" societies. Given this reality, it is crucial to examine the existence of political obligation - whether there is a duty to obey laws and institutions - as well as the legitimacy of public and social policies and the role of justice and freedom. This course addresses these fundamental questions through a careful study of political philosophy.
