In production and consumption of materials, structural materials are dominant. Technological development in materials industry affects significant positive impacts in broad end uses. A newly developed high performance materials fulfill higher design requirement, which makes more advanced product design possible. This class introduces production process of major materials and life cycle perspective on materials, especially structural materials. We discuss interactions amongst materials, finished products, economy, and environment in order to understand roles of materials in industrial metabolism. Global material flows and resource strategy are also introduced to give you a global vision on resources and materials.

 機械要素あるいは機械システムを設計するためには、機械材料の特性を、様々な角度から理解した上で、役立てねばならない。  本講義では、機械材料の力学特性、機能特性とその制御方法ならびに発現機構を学ぶ。ついで、機械材料の基礎特性を原子・分子・電子や平衡状態の観点から学ぶ。さらに、環境負荷低減、バイオマテリアルの観点から、機械材料に求められる機能、および具体例を学ぶ。/Mechanical properties of materials must be considered to design the machine system, and the materials should be selected for the machine components from various viewpoints. This lecture aims at providing information and knowledge of mechanical and functional properties of materials and control of the properties. Next, the basics of materials are provided from the viewpoints of the atom, molecule, electron, and equilibrium of phases. Finally, requirements for engineering materials and its concrete examples are given in terms of reducing environmental loads and biomaterials.

Advanced low-temperature plasma science and technology

The objectives of this short course are to provide a brief overview of recent development (advancement) of low-temperature plasma science and technology in several highlighted areas. The lecture will cover on new insights of low-temperature plasma interface related with electronics, photonics, and material sciences which we never been there before. In addition, the process of technology transfer from an invention to real applications as well as experiences of becoming start-up entrepreneur will be introduced.

中新世の化石類人猿から現代型ホモ・サピエンスの出現までの進化史を最新の研究成果をもとに主として形態学の側面から概観する.同時に化石人類の研究に関係する諸方法を概説する.スライドや模型を用いながら,ラミダス,アウストラロピテクス,初期ホモ属の各種について、最新の研究動向を紹介する. In this course, we overview the evolutionary history of humans, from the Miocene hominoids to Homo sapiens, based on new research of the fossil record. Slides and replicas of key fossils are used to enhance understandings of early hominids such as Ardipithecus ramidus and Australopithecus species.
