Multivariable calculus

This course covers the differentiation and integration of a function of several variables. It mainly consists of three parts: partial derivatives, multiple integrals and vector calculus. Improper integral for single variable function, implicit function theorem will also be taught. Some applications of these mathematical concepts will be introduced. This course is a continuation of the single-variable Calculus that I taught in Autumn.

This course introduces fundamental mathematical tools that are useful in analyzing various public policies in a scientific way. By taking this course, you will be able to systematically and intuitively apply mathematical methods to economic and management issues and utilize them for your research on public policy issues. The focus of this course is on (i) fundamental elements and (ii) applications to real world issues. The fundamental elements include functions, sequence and series, differentiation, unconstrained and constrained optimization, integration, and matrix algebra. We also cover simple versions of differential and difference equations to understand the basic concept of dynamic systems. It is important for you to realize in advance that this course is a building block for any further study of public policy.

Mathematical modeling

In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of mathematical modeling. A model is an idealized representation of the real world. Mathematical modeling is the process by which the complexity of real-world phenomena is simplified such that they can be described, more abstractly, in mathematical terms. The hope is that this abstraction of the real world can then help us understand the essence of the phenomena we wish to understand and/or predict. The concept of mathematical modeling is common to virtually all empirical sciences—not only natural and engineering sciences but also human sciences such as economics, psychology, sociology, etc. The lectures introduce three types of mathematical modeling strategies: optimization, modeling through dynamical systems (be they continuous, discrete or of cellular automaton-type), and probabilistic models. The introductory part starts with the concept of optimization and the mathematical methods needed to tackle such problems. The middle and main part explores the behaviour of both discrete and continuous dynamical systems. The focus will lie on stability analysis for such systems as well as on the relationship between discrete and continuous models (continuum limits and discretisation methods). In the last part (and if time permits), techniques for modeling probabilistic phenomena and stochastic processes as well as the concept of a Monte Carlo simulation will be introduced.
