Applied Japanese (1): Kanji and Pleasure Reading (L1) (Elementary)

This course is designed mainly for non-Chinese (i.e. non-Kanji) background beginner students (L1). For the first half of the course, students will learn the basics of Japanese orthographic system and structure of Kanji. Some useful methods of learning them are also introduced. For the second half, the main aim is to help students practice reading. Through graded readers, students will not only gain fluency on processing vocabulary and grammar but also learn Japanese culture and society. Specifically, by the end of the course, students are expected to be able to 1) understand different types of Japanese characters and how they work in Japanese, 2) understand the common components and the structure of Kanji, 3) understand the different types of Kanji readings (pronunciations) and the word formation with Kanji, 4) recognize and type/handwrite some Kanji vocabulary covered in the main course books “Genki” I for Intensive Japanese I, 5) understand common Kanji signs used in town, 6) use various effective ways for learning Kanji including the use of reference books, smartphone apps and web-based tools. 7) engage in reading Japanese independently, 8) expand knowledge of Japanese culture and society, and 9) process lexical and grammatical knowledge more fluently.

Effects of Exercise to Promote Health

Exercise is an inevitable stimulus to promote health. The effect of exercise is not only on increasing caloric expenditure but also on stimulating adaptations to change inner environment of body. Exercise can increase muscle mass and muscle power and give us smooth locomotion. On the other hand, excess stimulus by exercise can cause deficiencies such as on knees and legs. This course provides overview of the effect of exercise and health promotion by two professors. Prof. Fukui explains medical aspects of exercise. Prof. Hatta analyzes biochemical aspects of exercise on health promotion. ・Energy metabolism ・ Lactate Threshold ・Effects of exercise on carbohydrate metabolism ・Exercise intensity as a determinant of lipid metabolism ・Exercise training and health promotion related to energy metabolism ・Causes of fatigue during and after exercise ・Common health problems in daily life ・Age-related health problems and diseases ・Benefits of exercise in health promotion ・Sports-related injuries I Upper extremities and spine ・Sports-related injuries II Lower extremities

Students placed at the L4 level are expected to have mastered the elementary and the lower intermediate level language skills and functions, and are ready to proceed to the mid-intermediate Japanese. This course is designed to help students extend their abilities in interaction on academic or social issues with critical and creative thinking skills. Structured instruction will help students to develop four skills of reading, listening, speaking and writing, as well as to expand knowledge of Kanji, vocabulary and expressions, using the materials on various aspects of the contemporary society and sciences. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to: (1) read modern Japanese texts on various topics on contemporary social issues and sciences, (2) listen to lectures and conversations on related topics, (3) become familiar with idiomatic expressions and terms frequently used in newspaper, journals and books, (4) discuss various issues critically and creatively in Japanese, and (5) make oral presentations, write short essays, and distinguish clearly between the written and spoken languages.
