In production and consumption of materials, structural materials are dominant. Technological development in materials industry affects significant positive impacts in broad end uses. A newly developed high performance materials fulfill higher design requirement, which makes more advanced product design possible. This class introduces production process of major materials and life cycle perspective on materials, especially structural materials. We discuss interactions amongst materials, finished products, economy, and environment in order to understand roles of materials in industrial metabolism. Global material flows and resource strategy are also introduced to give you a global vision on resources and materials.

Frontier of Sustainability Science サステイナビリティ学最前線(2)

This course is designed to learn a great variety of researches conducted at the frontier of “Sustainability Science”, through the latest research outcomes of Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC) and Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S). SSC and IR3S were established to develop sustainability research, education, and public outreach programs and to strengthen coordination between national and local government, corporations, NPOs and other organizations while developing practical measures for technological innovation and social transformation (http://ssc-g.net/en/). By understanding a variety of academic fields related to sustainability and interactions among them, students will come to take part in the process of integrating multiple academic disciplines to implement sustainability science approach.

物質を加熱していくと固体、液体、気体と状態を変え、最終的にイオンと電子がバラバラになって高速で運動するプラズマ状態となる。プラズマは核融合エネルギー開発をはじめとして、プラズマプロセス、気体レーザ等の応用が期待される一方で、基礎科学として精緻な学問体系を有しており、宇宙、天体、地球物理との関連も深い。この講義では粒子、流体としての二面性を併せ持つプラズマの振る舞いが如何に記述できるか、プラズマ物理学の手ほどきを行う。具体的には、核融合プラズマを中心に、プラズマ基礎理論や基礎方程式にはじまり、力学平衡を学び、巨視的不安定や輸送の基礎を概観した後、具体的な応用として、核融合閉じ込め配位や天体プラズマの関連、特に磁力線のつなぎかわり現象(磁気リコネクション)を取り上げ、核融合の早期実現に向けた先進技術を議論する。比較的平易に幅広く勉強し、プラズマ理工学の概要を知ることを目的とする。

Human Population Dynamics by Professor Joel E. Cohen (Rockefeller University and Columbia University) Professor Joel E. Cohen is a world-level, famous researcher on human population dynamics, and we are lucky enough to invite him to an intensive course "Human Population Dynamics" of PEAK ES course, the University of Tokyo every two years.

This course will survey the past, present, and likely future of Earth's human population from a global perspective. It will examine the prospects for a larger, more slowly growing, older and more urban population in the future. It will consider the causes and consequences of demographic differences between regions. It will review and criticize concepts and estimates of human carrying capacity. Population interacts with economics, the environment and culture, including human values. As examples of these interactions, the course will explore the connections of population with food, water, energy, climate, education, equity, sustainability, governance, and globalization.

Environmental Problems and Society

In this course, we examine linkage between human society and living environment as well as the social and the natural. Roughly following the text, An Invitation to Environmental Sociology, we seek a critical understanding of the sociological concepts of sustainability and environmental issues including concept of ‘damage,’ framework of victimizers/victims relationships, sociological imagination, environmental justice, and so on. Some of these concepts are originated in the Environmental Sociology in Japan. This course is, therefore, uniquely designed to learn the knowledge of the Environmental Sociology in general and Japanese aspects of the Environmental Sociology. This course has three objectives below: 1. You will learn historical stages and various types of environmental issues from some case studies. 2. You will understand the theories and concepts of Environmental Sociology. 3. You will learn historical process of how the Environmental Sociology has been established.

本授業では、天体や宇宙の特性を、学部で学習した力学・電磁気学・相対論などを用いることで物理的に理解することを目的とする。対象は恒星や銀河、中性子星やブラックホール、ビッグバン宇宙と、その中での物質・元素進化である。どのように天体や宇宙を観測することで、宇宙の物理的描像につながるかも議論する。 This course aims at astrophysics: understanding the celestial objects and our universe with basic physics, such as dynamics, electro-magnetic theory, and relativistic theory. Main topics are stars in various stages, galaxies, neutron stars and black-holes, and chemical evolution of the universe. We also discuss how to observe these objects for the physical understanding.

放射線は理工学、農学、医学等の分野で広く活用され、工業生産にも活躍している。本講義では、放射線化学として発展してきた学問分野の講義を通じて、放射線の物理化学作用、原子力において放射線がかかわる問題、さらに放射線利用展開の現状とその基礎技術を学ぶ事を目的とする。 Radiation has been widely utilized in many fields such as science, technology, agriculture, and medicine. It also plays an important role in industries. In this lecture, radiation chemistry will be lectured first, then, physico-chemical action of radiation, radiological issues in nuclear engineering, and state-of-the-art of radiation applications and underlying techniques will be introduced.
