Frontier of Sustainability Science

This course is designed to learn a great variety of researches conducted at the frontier of “Sustainability Science”, through the latest research outcomes of Sustainability Science Consortium (SSC) and Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S). SSC and IR3S were established to develop sustainability research, education, and public outreach programs and to strengthen coordination between national and local government, corporations, NPOs and other organizations while developing practical measures for technological innovation and social transformation (http://ssc-g.net/en/). By understanding a variety of academic fields related to sustainability and interactions among them, students will come to take part in the process of integrating multiple academic disciplines to implement sustainability science approach.

The goal of this course is to give a practical overview of some of the tools which planners and researchers use to address transportation-related problems in urban areas. Specifically, we will focus on discrete choice theory, which is one of the working horses of transportation planning analysis. Rather than one-way lectures, this course emphasizes hands-on learning, so the theory discussed in class will be put into practice on several assignments and problem sets. In addition a comprehensive reading list is provided to help you deepen your understanding of the course content.

Praxis in Global Liberal Arts: "Visible/Invisible City"

This course aims to create a space for students from a variety of backgrounds to work together to discover and explore different aspects of the city of Tokyo, which are not always apparent to a casual observer. It will focus on the question of the city's "visibility/invisibility". What do you see on the surface of the city? What is hidden underneath, tucked in, or pushed aside? Students can approach this question in a number of ways, looking at, for example, the urban infrastructure, minority communities, the untold historical past, or simply the premodern past the remnants of which we find on the verge of extinction between high-rise buildings. The course will be a combination of in-class activities (lecture and discussion) and project based group work initiated by students. It is essential that students participate in all the activities. Details will be given in the first class (April 9).
