This course will aim to motivate students to seek ways to collaborate with diverse stakeholders in the international fora by offering opportunities to exchange views and discuss with senior officials, management staff and experts in government agencies, international organizations, global business entities, NPOs, and research institutions located in theUnited States. Planning and participating in discussion sessions with such professionals are expected to help students to identify today's social challenges from global and regional perspectives and to design solutions in line with the concept of the Global Leader Program for Social Design and Management (GSDM) [http://gsdm.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/].

In this course, we will read and discuss the book “The Politics of Imagining Asia,” written by one of the most important and influential scholars in today’s China, Wang Hui. Wang Hui is professor of Chinese literature and history at Tsinghua University in Beijing. His research interests range from Chinese intellectual history and modern literature to social and political theory. While his focus is on China, Wang Hui in the book discusses such broad topics as Orientalism, Max Weber, and the nation-state, as well as questions that have implications beyond the single country of China: Okinawa, Tibet, and the idea of Asia. One of the main thrusts of Wang Hui's thought is his critique of modes of modern knowledge that claims universality but has its peculiar origin in western Europe. As such, this course serves to challenge students to critically think about East Asia and China, both of their histories and current situation, as problems from a series of unconventional, in particular non-Western, perspectives, and by so doing develop their capability in historical conceptualization and critical analysis.

New biomedical advancements, such as gene therapy, regenerative medicine and stem cell technology, promise to transform healthcare over the coming years, but bring with them many challenges as policymakers are forced to consider competing ethical, scientific and commercial concerns. This course will explore some of the important current debates in this area from a predominantly social science perspective (although naturally, there will also be intersections with fields as diverse as philosophy, medicine, law and the humanities). Moreover, the course aims to place the discussion in a global context, exploring the historical, political and cultural reasons behind the variation in bioethical viewpoints around the world.
