An ionized gas is a state of gas in which ionization occurs and electrons and ions are present, and it is also referred to as plasma. When a high voltage is applied to a gas, electrons and ions begin to move, resulting in the flow of electric current, and in some cases the phenomenon is observed with accompanying light emission. During this process, highly reactive particles that are rarely present in ordinary gases, known as reactive species, are generated and exert characteristic effects on materials. In this way, ionized gases (plasmas) exhibit not only electrical effects but also chemical effects.
Ionized gases and plasmas are deeply involved in many aspects of modern engineering technologies and social infrastructure, including microfabrication, etching, and thin-film deposition in semiconductor manufacturing processes; the understanding and control of electrical breakdown in power systems and high-voltage equipment; environmental applications (including water treatment); medical applications; energy conversion; nuclear fusion research; material surface modification; flow control, and agricultural applications.
In this course, students will systematically study ionized gases, starting from fundamental processes such as the mechanisms by which gases begin to ionize under applied voltage, electrical phenomena in gases under various conditions, and the basic properties of ionized gases and plasmas. In addition, plasma diagnostic techniques, with an emphasis on spectroscopic measurements, will be introduced. The aim of this course is to develop a fundamental understanding of ionized gas and plasma phenomena from an engineering perspective and to build a foundation for their practical applications.
