Visualizing Japan in the Modern World

We will reveal the history of modern Japan through various images and historical documents. Students are expected to complete a few group projects to deepen their understanding of the content covered in the course. This intensive course will take place in February (usually over 5 days). Details will be announced in December-January via email/portal site system.

歴史を描いたイメージを通して日本が近代国家に変容する姿を明らかにします。学生は授業で扱う内容を深めるためにグループプロジェクトを行います。使用言語は英語ですので、日本人学生にとっては英語によるディスカッション、文献購読、ライティング力の強化のためにいい機会となります。授業は２月に開講されます（約5日の集中講義）。詳細は12~1月頃にポータルサイトを通してお知らせする予定です。

授業計画

"Visualizing Japan in the Modern World" is an experience-based course for which we use educational materials from "Visualizing Japan," an edX course oﬀered by MIT (https://www.edx.org/*****). In this class, we will learn about Japan by exploring images that pertain to the emergence of Japan as a modern state. We will ﬁrst focus on images that depict Japan as it comes into contact with the rest of the world after its long and deep isolation during the feudal period. We will compare images drawn from a wide range of collections in the U.S. and Japan to visualize the time when Commodore Matthew C. Perry arrived in Japan in 1853-54. Later sections of the course will cover the opening of Japanese ports (e.g., Yokohama), Russo-Japanese War, the Hibiya Park riot, and modern Japanese women (the Shiseido Archives). Visualizing Japanはハーバード大学とMITの共同で制作されたMOOC Visualizing Japan(https://www.edx.org/*****)を教材として用いた学生中心型の授業です。日本が近代国家に変容していく様子をイメージ（例. 米国と日本の画家によって描かれた絵画）を通して学びます。講義は長い鎖国の続いていた日本にペリーが訪れ外国への門戸を開いていく1853-54から始まります。その後、横浜開港、日露戦争、日比谷焼き討ち事件、文明とともに開化していく日本女性の姿などをイメージを通して検討します。日本人の目に映る外国人、外国人の目に映る日本人を絵画や写真を用いて比較することにより、視覚的な相違が概念の相違に基づくことを認識するよい機会となり、他文化の理解へと繋がることを認識します。
