English Language-Global Liberal Arts 2
Exploring Cultural Diversity through Food
【Course Goals】
1- to provide a space where you can continue to develop your English language skills beyond the FLOW course and over a 13-week course period;
2-- to help you build enough confidence in your English language skills so you can feel more prepared to take senior-division English-language classes, either on campus (GLA courses) or abroad
【Overview of the Course】
Food is not only something that sustains us physically, but also an expression of the cultural traditions, values, and beliefs that have been passed down through generations. These traditions and values ultimately reflect the unique identity of our communities and contribute to their cultural heritage.
As global citizens, we have both the privilege and responsibility to understand cultural diversity, and food constitutes a powerful lens through which cultural diversity can be both understood and appreciated.
In this course, we will discuss various topics related to food and cultural diversity, with special attention to:
1. Exploring cultural identity among local, national, social, ethnic/racial, immigrant, gender, & indigenous communities
2. Practicing cultural empathy:
--By investigating the complex socio-political and historical factors embedded in our food traditions &
food habits, such as world conflicts, colonization, slavery, globalization, migration, and tourism.
---By exploring food activism, as a socio-political movement that addresses the effects of colonization, slavery, and war on local and indigenous food traditions, while also working to reform the food system to be
more just, sustainable, and healthy for everyone.
【Learning Objectives】
Similarly to other L-GLA courses, this course will also help you:
--develop advanced language proficiency through small, interactive classes
--build your confidence in speaking English for academic purposes–particularly class presentations, recorded videos, and poster presentations
--improve your ability to express your considered opinion on a topic of academic interest
--improve your ability to engage fluently and critically in classroom discussions
--self-assess and reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses in English speaking and communication
skills
--find tools that will help you continue practicing these skills in the future
