This course teaches students a systematic approach to problem-solving, innovation, and decision-making. Initially, students grasp the significance of analyzing and defining the problem space, identifying constraints on the solution, and recognizing obstacles to overcome. Subsequently, students explore various methods to generate a diverse range of creative solutions including the use of heuristics and other tools that produce divergent and convergent thinking. Finally, the course teaches students about different decision-making frameworks to assess and determine the most viable solutions in the face of limited information.
Course Objectives & Learning Outcomes
#emotional-intelligence: Utilize emotional intelligence to interact effectively.
#audience: Tailor oral and written work by considering the situation and perspective of the people receiving it.
#confidence: Approach projects and communications with an appropriate level of confidence.
#gap-analysis: Identify and evaluate whether there are suitable existing solutions to a problem or whether a
creative new solution is required.
#constraints: Identify and apply constraint satisfaction as a way to solve problems.
#iterative-design: Apply design research processes and iterative design thinking to conceive and refine products or solutions.
#divergent-convergent: Apply or evaluate an ideation or problem solving process using approaches that effectively incorporate divergent and/or convergent thinking.
#heuristics: Identify when to use heuristics and when to avoid them.
#right-problem: Characterize the nature of the problem.
#break-it-down: Organize problems into tractable components and design solutions.
