グローバル教養科目（Education, Knowledge, and Global Change）
Education is shaping how we understand the world, whose knowledge we value, and how we work together to address global change
We live in an era of profound global transformation. Artificial intelligence, climate change, migration, demographic shifts, digital technologies, and widening social inequalities are reshaping the ways people live, work, and learn. While these challenges are often discussed through political, economic, or technological lenses, education remains one of the most powerful—and often overlooked—forces shaping how societies understand and respond to change.
Through this course, you will explore education not simply as schooling, but as a lifelong and socially embedded process through which knowledge is created, shared, challenged, and transformed. Rather than asking only what people should learn, we will ask deeper questions about whose knowledge is valued, how learning occurs, and how education can contribute to more just, inclusive, and sustainable futures.
We will examine diverse educational approaches across cultures and contexts through comparative education, educational innovation, Open Education, learning ecologies, artificial intelligence, decolonial perspectives, and international case studies. Through collaborative inquiry and project-based learning, you will design innovative educational responses to real-world global challenges.
Ultimately, the course aims to help you become thoughtful global citizens who can critically evaluate knowledge, appreciate multiple ways of learning, and imagine new educational possibilities for a rapidly changing world.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Explain key concepts related to education, knowledge, and global change from diverse cultural and international perspectives.
(2) Analyze critically contemporary educational issues, including the roles of technology, artificial intelligence, equity, and social justice in shaping learning.
(3) Communicate and collaborate effectively with peers from diverse disciplinary and cultural backgrounds to discuss educational challenges and solutions.
(4) Design an evidence-informed educational innovation that addresses a contemporary global challenge by integrating insights from comparative education and multiple knowledge traditions.

授業計画
The course is built around three guiding questions. Each question represents one stage of an intellectual journey to rethink how education, knowledge, and global change are interconnected.
Part I – What is Worth Knowing? (Weeks 1–4)
We will begin by examining the nature of knowledge itself and try to answer some related questions such as:
What counts as knowledge? Who creates knowledge? Whose knowledge is recognized or excluded? How is knowledge changing in the age of artificial intelligence?
Through these discussions, you will critically examine the relationship between knowledge, power, culture, and society.
Part II – How Do People Learn? (Weeks 5–8)
The second part broadens your understanding of learning beyond traditional classrooms. We will discuss some learning theories, lifelong learning, Open Education, learning ecologies, digital learning, and comparative education. We will learn about where learning happens and how different educational systems respond to changing social needs.
Part III – How Should Education Respond to Global Change? (Weeks 9–13)
The final part focuses on the future of education. You will investigate how education can respond to contemporary global challenges such as artificial intelligence, sustainability, migration, inequality, and global citizenship. In this part, you will work on your own educational innovation project.
授業の方法
My course is designed in which all students are expected to engage actively in discussions, analyze diverse forms of evidence, reflect on multiple perspectives, and collaborate with classmates from different academic backgrounds. We will have short lectures with interactive activities, case studies, and multimedia resources.
成績評価方法
Please check the grading scale that applies to this course. If the Course Code ends without “-P/F”, this is a course with a letter grade (A+, A, B, C, F). If the Course Code ends with “-P/F”, this is a Pass/Fail Course.
Students will be assessed on the following:
1. Discussion, participation and engagement in class: 30%
2. Individual presentation: 20%
3. Weekly reflections and assignments: 20%
4. Final project: 30% (20% for the project; 10% for the presentation)
