グローバル教養科目（Revising Reality: How Ideas Reframe the World）

This course gives students an opportunity to engage directly with texts, both ancient and modern, that explore ideas on how individuals and societies can balance their needs and desires in order to live in peace and prosperity. The quest for this balance hasn’t stopped with modernity or technological advancement and the old questions persist. We will read selections from works that have shaped not just our ideas but sometimes the course of human history in major ways. They are worth our consideration not because they have been right but because they have pushed us to think hard about the world, ourselves, and each other.

Students will develop critical approaches to a set of shared texts as they investigate and debate fundamental questions of human experience from a variety of perspectives. Where does society come from? How do we balance individual liberty and the public good? What behaviors and practices perpetuate injustice? Can we create a better society? How do power and privilege define our capacity to make change? How do we find truth? Can facts be detached from cultural contexts?
