Exploring Global Issues in Japan: Local, Institutional, and Transnational Practices
This course explores contemporary global issues in Japan from local, institutional, and transnational perspectives. With a particular focus on youth as the central subject of analysis, the course examines a range of social issues in Japan, including population decline, reforms in education and employment (changing patterns of learning and work), well-being, inequalities related to gender, region, and social class, policies concerning immigrants and international students, as well as the social transformations brought about by artificial intelligence (AI).
This course also explores policies and practices aimed at addressing global challenges, while examining their impact on youth as well as the contributions young people can make toward solving these issues.
By exchanging experiences and perspectives with peers from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, students will be encouraged to critically reassess their understanding of Japanese society and deepen their knowledge through global comparisons.
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1. Explain social issues in Japan from a comparative international perspective
2. Analyze global issues through local, institutional, and transnational perspectives
3. Identify meaningful ways in which youth can engage with and contribute to addressing global challenges
4.Collaborate effectively with peers from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds, and engage in discussions with respect for different values and viewpoints.
5.Develop a critical understanding of the societal and personal implications, benefits, and risks of artificial intelligence (AI).

Week 1: Guidance: Why Study Global Issues in Japan?

Week 6: Interim Presentation and Reflection: Global Issues in Japan and the World
Week 7: Internationalization in Japan (1): Immigration Policies and the Experiences of Working and Living in Japan
Week 8: Field visit to a Tokyo-based organization (e.g., international/ government organization, corporate, NGO etc. )working to address global challenges in Japan) will be organized. The details will be announced in the class (NOTE: Students will need to pay the transportation fee).
Week 9: Internationalization in Japan (2) : International Student Policies and the Experience of Studying and Living in Japan
Week 10: Final Presentation (1) Global Issues and Youth
Week 11: Final Presentation (2) Global Issues and Youth
Week 12: Final Presentation (3) Global Issues and Youth
Week 13: Wrap Up: Reimagining the Future of Youth in Japan and the World through the SDGs
授業の方法
The class activities will include lectures, group discussion, presentations, feedback to the peers, field visit, film viewing, reflection of the learning experiences etc. Various group activities will be incorporated in the course to promote mutual learning and deepen students' understanding of contemporary global issues in Japan. Enrolled students will be engaged in learning activities in English throughout the course. The course also draws on examples from other countries/regions to help students understand social issues in Japan from a comparative international perspective.
成績評価方法

Your final grade will be based on combination of:
a. Presentation [interim presentation* (20%) + final presentation** (30%)] (50%)
b. Class attendance and active participation (30%)
c. Pre-class assignment(10%)
d. Weekly reflection comments (10%)
Students in GLA courses will be evaluated based on their effort and contribution in the class and not by English proficiency. Non-native English speakers are encouraged to join this course!
<NOTE>
*The interim presentation will be an individual presentation in a small group. Students will select a country and examine one of its major social issues, with reference to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion will address policies and practices aimed at resolving the issue and will incorporate an international perspective through comparison with Japan. You will need to present a summary of the literature on the selected topic with your comments/opinions/questions about the literature.
**For the final presentation, students will further analyze the social issue discussed in their interim presentation from the perspective of youth, focusing either on the impact of the issue on youth or on the contributions of youth-led activities and initiatives toward solving the issue. The final presentation will be either an individual or group presentation in a class. The details will be explained in the class.

If you must be absent due to unavoidable circumstances, you are required to inform the instructor in advance. Students may still be eligible for course credit with up to three absences.Three instances of arriving more than 10 minutes late shall be counted as one absence.
Enrolled students will have many opportunities to work with the peers of different academic and cultural backgrounds in a group. Thus, those who are willing to learn from such a diverse community are welcome.

【Message from the Instructor】Ever since my childhood, my family hosted international students from different parts of the world. As I grew older, I had the opportunity to study abroad in North America and conduct research in so-called Global South countries. Through my global experiences both within and outside Japan, I learned that encountering diverse people and values offers an opportunity to reevaluate our own “common sense.” I also learned that intercultural immersion experiences expand our own perspectives and empower us to contribute in a glocal community. Students who wish to explore these opportunities are welcome to this GLA course!
