Introduction to Indigenous Society and Culture in Japan
This course focuses on the indigenous society and culture of Japan, with particular attention to the Ainu people, who are regarded as indigenous to the island now called Hokkaido. It discusses the definition of indigenous, the history of settler colonialism, and contemporary Ainu culture. No prior disciplinary knowledge is required--students who are interested in the topic and are able to travel to Hokkaido are welcome to register.

Further details will be provided on the first day of the class--students MUST attend the online session on April 15 at 18:45. Reading materials will be assigned in advance. If you are interested in getting a head start, please read the following article (this will be assigned for May 20). This may be rather challenging for students who are unfamiliar with the field but you do not need to worry--a concise and clear summary and explanation will be provided, along with discussion time to deepen your understanding. Museum visits to Upopoy (in Shiraoi) and Pirika Kotan (in Sapporo) with possible discussion with curators (note the visit sites are subject to change). (See notes on enrollment for further information.)
授業の方法
The class is discussion based. Students must be prepared to and willing to express their ideas and opinions in class while respecting those of others. There will be four online sessions during the summer semester, followed by two days of actual visits to various sites in Hokkaido, where students will gain a first-hand insight into the dynamics of contemporary Ainu culture today. 成績評価方法
【Please check the grading scale that applies to this course. If the Course Code ends without “-P/F”, this is a course with a letter grade (A+, A, B, C, F). If the Course Code ends with “-P/F”, this is a Pass/Fail Course.】 Participation and final paper. Details will be provided on the first day.
履修上の注意
【If the number of students enrolling in this course exceeds the number determined by the instructor, there may be a selection process. Instructions for the selection process will be given in the first class.】 Students MUST ATTEND ALL online sessions on the following days/times: April 15 (Wed) 18:45-20:15 May 20 (Wed) 18:45-20:15 June 24 (Wed) 18:45-20:15 July 15 (Wed) 18:45-20:15 August 9 and 10 in Hokkaido. Students must be physically and independently in Sapporo by 9:30 am in Sapporo (specific location will be announced later) on August 9 and be ready to be there until 6 pm on August 10. Note that there is NO financial support for traveling and accommodation as well as other related costs (such as museum admissions). Students must bear the cost by themselves and must have sufficient insurance coverage for emergency cases. Further details will be provided on the first day.
