グローバル教養科目(Architecture and Well-Being: Designing a Campus for the Students)

In this course, we will explore how architectural design influences our physical and mental well-being by working on a course project: a post-occupancy evaluation survey to understand the students’ perceptions and evaluations of different spaces on campus. Since the course is offered to Japanese and international students, it will also have a strong intercultural component. Along with the design and implementation of the course project, we will discuss and critically analyze how students from different cultural backgrounds perceive and live the university campus in radically different ways, not only as a facility for work, but also as a space for socializing and seeking their own identities.
By the end of this course, the students will be able to:
•Understand the basic principles of well-being in architectural design for educational facilities.
•Critically analyze the architectural design of a university campus from the user’s perspective.
•Design a post-occupancy evaluation survey.
•Value individual accountability and teamwork as part of the learning process.

授業計画
Following the TBL methodology, this course is organized into thematic modules; each module spans two weeks of class. The syllabus may be adjusted to adapt to the class level. The schedule below is suggested as a syllabus for an average class. W01: Introduction to the course and group formation W02-03: Campus design. This module will introduce the students to the current trends of campus design and how this design shapes the students’ lives, social connections, and well-being. W04-05: Post-Occupancy evaluation (POE). In this module, students will learn the origins and historical evolution of POE and how to critically analyze, using POE, the architectural design of our campus. W06: Preparation for the workshop 01. In this class, students will prepare for workshop 01 and receive feedback from the teacher on their preparation. W07: Workshop 01 W08-09: Well-being on campus. Is our campus comfortable? This module will present the diverse ways in which students perceive the built environment on campus, from psychological to physical comfort. W10-11: Comfort and educational buildings: A complex relationship. This module will critically explore, through real case studies, how students’ comfort is often disregarded as a design factor in educational buildings. This module might include a guest-lecture. W12-13: Workshop 02 and submission of the final report. The students will work in class, guided by the teacher, on activities to prepare for the submission of the final report.
授業の方法
This course employs the Team-Based Learning methodology (TBL, チーム基盤型学習in Japanese). TBL is an active learning methodology that promotes individual and group accountability, application of knowledge, and critical thinking. You will work in groups that will stay the same throughout the course. You will not be able to choose your team members; your teacher will form the groups, thus you will be working with students from different backgrounds and forming bonds with them throughout the course. This course is organized into learning modules. Each module is two-weeks long. In the first week, we review the basic concepts of the module with short quizzes and in-class discussions. In the second week, we solve an application activity to put our knowledge into practice.
