グローバル教養科目(Photographing Tokyo: Looking at One’s Place in the Urban Landscape)

Photographing Tokyo: Looking at One’s Place in the Urban Landscape
This course is an opportunity for students to learn about photography and landscape along with the modern metropolis of Tokyo in which they find themselves. In this age inundated with Instagram, it aims to encourage students to slow down to think on photography both as an artistic medium and a tool for contemplation. And it hopes students will learn about Tokyo and improve photographic skills.

授業計画
The class time will consist of lectures on photographic techniques, the history of photography and landscape painting, and the history of Tokyo, and presentations and discussions of student photographs.
授業の方法
Depending on the interests of the students taking the class, some readings may be assigned. But assignments will consist of thematic photographic projects to be carried out on students' free time outside of class. From these photographs, students will put together a portfolio to present to the class at the end of the semester.

履修上の注意
[If the number of students enrolling in this course exceeds the number determined by the instructor, there may be a selection process. Instructions for the selection process will be given in the first class, so if you are interested in taking this course, please be sure to attend the first class.] While guidance can be given on film photography and printing, the assumption is that students will primarily use a digital camera. There is no requirement on the quality of camera; a smartphone will suffice. Students should ideally bring a device with a larger screen, such as a laptop or tablet, to present images. Students wishing to use film must bear the cost of film, and development, printing scanning or darkroom rental. Interested students must attend the first week and bring some photographs to show in the class, in the event there is the need to limit enrolment.
