グローバル教養科目（Women in Science）
Women in Science
The course will take an intersectional approach to why we commonly find an underrepresentation of women in the "science" fields. The course will begin by addressing our own unconscious biases and stereotypes, and question the research behind male and female differences. We will cover the brief history of the underrepresentation of minorities and explore research articles on why and how women and other minorities have been excluded from STEM fields. We will primarily discuss how representation and the sense of belonging are important for diversity in the sciences to flourish. Students will be expected to read scientific articles, discuss them in class, and apply those concepts to examine their own social environments.

The course will take place over 13 weeks in-person on Hongo Campus.

3. Beyond the binary: The science of male and female differences.
4. More than Marie Curie: History of Women in Science.
5. Leaky Pipeline 1- Barriers to science.

7. Intersectional Feminism 1 - Race, LGBTQIA+
8. Intersectional Feminism 2 - Parenthood
9. What can we do? How to create fair and equitable environments.

授業の方法
Before the class, students will be required to watch/read/reflect on lecture videos, assigned readings, reflection questions or other small assignments for homework.
The course will include brief lectures and focus on discussions of assigned materials. Finally, there will be a final project where students may collect data from their relevant environments (e.g. gender distribution in their own departments, institutions, home countries, etc…) and apply the theories we have learned in class to analyze the mechanisms that contributed to their findings.
成績評価方法
【Please note that this course uses a five-point grading scale of A+, A, B, C, or F(Fail).】
Students will be assessed on the following:
1. Participation and engagement in class: 30%
2. Reflection papers: 30%
3. Final project: 40% (20% for presentation, 20% for paper)
