グローバル教養科目(Women in Science)

Women in Science
The course will take an intersectional approach to why we commonly find an underrepresentation of women in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. The course will begin by addressing our own unconscious biases and stereotypes, and question the research behind male and female differences. We will cover the brief history of the underrepresentation of minorities and explore research articles on why and how women and other minorities have been excluded from STEM fields. Students will be expected to read scientific articles, discuss them, and apply those concepts to examine their own social environments.

授業計画
The course will take place over 13 weeks in-person on Komaba Campus. Semester schedule: 1. Introduction 2. Stereotypes, Unconscious Bias, Confirmation bias, Moral self-licensing 3. Beyond the binary: The science of male and female differences. 4. More than Marie Curie: History of Women in Science. 5. Leaky Pipeline 1- Barriers to science. 6. Leaky Pipeline 2- Exclusion from science 7. Intersectional Feminism 1 - Race, LGBTQIA+ 8. Intersectional Feminism 2 - Parenthood 9. What can we do? How to create fair and equitable environments. 10. Data in Japan and UTokyo 11. Final project 1 12. Final project 2 13. Reflections *Please note the schedule listed here may be subject to change.
授業の方法
The course will include brief lectures to review the reading materials that were assigned for homework, and focus on discussions of those readings. Finally, there will be a project where students are to collect data from their relevant environments (e.g. gender distribution in their own departments, institutions, home countries, etc…) and apply the theories we have learned in class to analyze the mechanisms that contributed to their findings.
成績評価方法
【Please note that this course will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis.】 Students will be assessed on the following: 1. Participation and engagement in class: 30% 2. Reflection papers: 30% 3. Final project: 40% (20% for presentatio, 20% for paper)
