A Global Perspective on Controversial Moments and Memorials
Familiarize with historical and current definitions of “material culture,” "monument,” and “memorial," both locally and globally.

Evaluate current debates around controversial monuments and memorials, as a way to reflect on political, social, and racial justice movements around the world.

Practice analyzing “material culture texts” in order to determine the author’s perspective, intended message, rhetorical features, and audience reception.

Practice ethnographic research through direct observation and analysis of local monuments and memorials.

Practice academic writing, presentation, and discussion in English.

Collaborate with other students through group discussion and reflection in English.
