グローバル教養科目(Fairy Tales and Gothic Stories: Reading Victorian Fantasy)
Fairy Tales and Gothic Stories: Reading Victorian Fantasy
This course introduces the weird, whimsical, and uncanny world of nineteenth-century British fantasy literature. It examines how folktales have been adapted and transformed into short fiction. As a case study, students will read fairy tales and Gothic stories by George MacDonald (1824–1905), tracing their roots in European folk tradition and analyzing their literary, historical, and religious aspects. Its objectives are twofold: (1) to help students understand how traditional folk narratives are adapted into literary texts, and (2) to equip students with critical tools to analyse fantasy and short fiction.
At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Identify possibilities and dilemmas in critically interpreting fiction.
2. Explain the structural and stylistic effects of fairy tales and Gothic stories.
3. Analyse the interrelation between traditional folk narratives and literary adaptations.
