History of the Japanese Environment: Architecture & Cities, Gardens & Landscape
This course broadly surveys the development of the architectural, landscape and urban forms of Japan from prehistory through to the present. There will be a focus on specific architectural monuments, such as Ise Shrine, Tōdaiji, Katsura Villa, Nihonbashi and the Osaka Expo, as well as on the major modes of urbanization from the sacred sites of Shinto and the capitals of the Asuka period to medieval castle towns and the modern city. Cultural, economic and ecological contexts will be interwoven into the discussion of architecture and urbanism, including Buddhist philosophy and the Meiji ideology of modernization to artisanal traditions of carpentry and gardening.

The first half will quickly roughly survey the first millennium of Japanese civilization, while the second half will cover modern times since the Edo period. 1 Prehistory — Shintō, and its Architecture & Construction: Ise & Izumo Shrines 2 7th & 8th Centuries — Chinese Architecture & Urban Form: Hōryūji & Nara 3 9th to 13th Century — Heian-kyō Palatial Architecture & Byōdōin: Genji monogatari & Pure Land Buddhism 4 8th to 12th Century — National Architecture & Resource Networks: the Construction & Reconstruction of Tōdaiji 5 11th to 15th Century — Buddhist & Zen Gardens: Sakuteiki, Musō Soseki & Saihōji, Jishōji and Ryōanji 6 16th to 17th Century — Castles, Their Towns & Gardens: Himeji & Okayama 7 17th Century — The Tea House & Katsura Villa: Sen no Rikyū, samurai & the Imperial Family 8 Late 17th to early 19th Century Urban Vernacular: the Culture of Edo 9 Late 19th Century — Modernization, Meiji Architecture & the New State 10 Early 20th Century — Imperial Japan: Maekawa Kunio & the International Style, and Gotō Junpei & Colonial Experimentation 11 Postwar — 1964 Tokyo Olympics & 1970 Osaka Expo: Tange Kenzō & the Metabolists 12 Postwar to Present — Kōgai & the Countryside: Environmental Problems from Minamata Disease to Fukushima 13 Student Presentations The schedule may change depending on enrollment.

No prior knowledge of architecture or related fields of specialization is necessary. However, a basic understanding of Japanese history would be most helpful. Interested students should be sure to attend the first class.
