グローバル教養科目(Cultivating Well-being on the University Campus)

Cultivating Well-being on the University Campus
University education offers myriads of exciting opportunities and experiences for students; but it is also true that navigating college life can occasionally become challenging and overwhelming. Most university students spend a considerable amount of time on campus. Yet most university campuses are not envisioned as spaces to alleviate stress and improve the well-being of students nor the whole university community (faculty, researchers, staff). There is solid evidence showing that contact with nature can have a positive effect on our physical and mental health, particularly local greenspace for city dwellers. Some urban university campuses, such as Hongo and Komaba at the University of Tokyo, are rich in natural landscapes despite being located within highly urbanized areas. How can the university community re-envision their campus environments as spaces to foster well-being throughout student/professional campus life? The main objective of this course is to provide students at the University of Tokyo with an opportunity to re-discover their campus as a unique local ecosystem of natural and human-made elements that can foster emotional and physical health.

授業の方法
This is a hands-on, workshop-type course in which we learn-by-doing. We use an active learning approach, with students taking the lead in class activities, working mostly in small groups. We use some academic texts and audiovisuals as background materials, yet most of the course time is spent engaging in actual exploration of the campus environments, outdoors and indoors e.g. nature walks, forest bathing, photography, video making, etc. We also converse in class to reflect on our findings, and we do some mind-fullness practice. The course is taught in English but it is designed in a very accessible, inclusive way to facilitate that local and international students can interact fruitfully despite any language barriers.
