グローバル教養科目(Japan As They Saw It)

Japan As They Saw It
In this course, we will examine and discuss the impact of international tourism and travel on perceptions and representations of different countries and cultures. The starting point of our discussions will be “Japan As They Saw It,” an online anthology of descriptions of Japan in the 19th and early 20th centuries by visitors from the United States and Britain. We will assess how foreign tourists and residents viewed Japan and how they chose to describe the country to readers in the books and letters they wrote. We will then move to the present day and examine how Japan is presented to the world now by tourists and other visitors, particularly online and through social media. Through our discussions, we will attempt to develop a systematic understanding both of how different countries and cultures are perceived and portrayed by naive visitors and of the resulting challenges, including stereotyping, intercultural misunderstandings, and overtourism.

授業計画
The topics and assignments for each week will be decided as the semester progresses based on the discussions among the teacher and students. Field trips within Tokyo will be held from 14:00 to about 16:00 on Saturday, April 19, and Monday April 21. (No online class will be held on April 21) On each trip, we will walk around one or two tourist areas of Tokyo and reflect together about the tourist experience there. Possible destinations include Ueno, Asakusa, Akihabara, Ginza, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Odaiba. Students will be asked to submit short reports afterwards on their observations. Each student will be expected to attend only one of the two trips if they can. If a student cannot attend any of the field trips, they will be asked to submit a short report about personal observations of tourists and tourism in Japan. Students will not be penalized for not attending any of the field trips. Another set of optional field trips might be scheduled for early July, probably to the tourist areas of Yokohama. The details will be worked out together with the students in June.
