Globalisation and English as an International Language: Exploring the Plurality of Englishes
【Please note that you are assessed on a Pass/Fail basis in this course.】

English is the dominant international language of the 21st century. English is spoken by more than two billion people across the globe as the language of communications, science, information technology, business, entertainment, and diplomacy. It has been described as the world's lingua franca and is frequently used for communication between people who do not share a language. In this course, we will explore such a phenomenon: English as an international language (EIL) through a series of tasks and activities.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Become acquainted with collective knowledge from relevant fields, such as World Englishes, English as a Lingua Franca, Global Englishes, and English as an International Language, and the implications of this knowledge on English language learning and teaching.
2. Critically analyse and discuss various EIL topics.
3. Conduct research on an EIL topic and give a (conference) presentation.
