グローバル教養科目(The Meaning of Language in the Age of AI)

The Meaning of Language in the Age of AI
【Please note that you are assessed on a five-level scale of A+, A, B, C, or F/Fail in this course.】

Language has long been thought to be primarily or exclusively an ability of humans, but recent advances in large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Bard challenge that assumption. In this course, we will discuss the implications of the new LLMs for theories of language, and we will attempt to develop a new linguistic theory that encompasses both natural language and LLMs.

The conventional linguistic theories surveyed will include both the formal approaches of linguists and philosophers such as William Dwight Whitney, Max Müller, Ferdinand de Saussure, Edward Sapir, Roman Jakobson, Leonard Bloomfield, Noam Chomsky, and H.P. Grice and the more informal or naive understandings of language that can be observed in everyday discourse. We will test key aspects of those formal and informal theories against the current LLMs, and, after considering the properties of theories in general, work together to try to create a new theory of language for this era of artificial intelligence.

授業計画
The week-by-week schedule will be decided as the semester progresses based on the discussions among the teacher and students.
授業の方法
This class will be taught online using Zoom. In order to facilitate active discussions during class, students will need to be able to turn on their microphones during class. Students will also be welcome, though not required, to turn on their cameras when they are speaking.
成績評価方法
Each student’s grade will be based on participation in class discussions, homework assignments, and either a final paper or a final presentation. The paper or presentation should focus on some aspect of an issue discussed in class. (Whether students will write a paper or give a presentation will be decided by the middle of the semester.)
教科書
No textbook will be used.
参考書
References and readings will be provided through the class website.
履修上の注意
This class will be taught in English, and all discussions, homework, and final papers or presentations should be in English. No prior knowledge of linguistics, philosophy, or computer science is required. Up to 20 students will be, in principle, allowed to register for this class. If more than 20 students are present for the first class, the instructor will make a selection. The criteria for the selection will be announced in that class.
