Racial and Linguistic Diversity and Inclusion
How does race and language impact the way people are seen and treated in society? In this course, we examine the field of raciolinguistics—how language shapes our ideas of race and how ideas of race influence language and language use. We look at examples within Japan, China, the U.S., Brazil, and other countries, where “standard English” is often associated with Whiteness and nonnative speakers are often considered “deficient” language users, even when they are skilled communicators. We will debunk common myths about race and language and in doing so, consider ways to improve diversity and inclusion for racial and linguistic minorities in Japan. Towards the end of the course, students will choose one case to explore in depth and present their findings to the class.

【Please note that this course uses a five-point grading scale of A+, A, B, C, or F(Fail).】 Participation: in-class discussion & comments 20% Group project proposal: 15% Homework: reading weekly articles and online comments 30% Final Project: Group final presentation and individual paper 35%

Instructions for the selection process will be given in the first class, so if you are interested in taking this course, please be sure to attend the first class.】l (1) Up to 20 students will be, in principle, allowed to register for this class. (2) If more than 20 students come to the first class, instructors make a selection. For details, please follow their guidance. Please note that this course is 90 minutes long (fourth period starts at 3:10 pm) as opposed to 105 minute length of most senior division courses. Individual reading and reflection assignments will be assigned to make up for the 15 minutes of reduced class time.
