グローバル教養科目（The Problems of English in Today’s World）
The Problems of English in Today’s World
The English language has a complex, often contradictory status in today’s world. While it is increasingly regarded as an international lingua franca, it is also a diverse, rapidly changing language, and even fluent English speakers can struggle to understand each other. Although called a “global” language, it remains closely linked in many people’s minds to a few English-speaking countries, and there are many countries where English is barely used. In Japan, all children must study English in school, even though relatively few adults use English in their work or daily lives.
In this class, we will try to understand these contradictions by discussing topics such as the following:
- The characteristics of English as a natural language
- “Standard” English and the diversity of English
- The status of English around the world
- English, politics, and ideology
- The economics of English
- English and culture
- The status of English in Japan
- Controversies about English and English education in Japan
- Advances in artificial intelligence and the future of human language

授業計画
The week-by-week schedule will be decided as the semester progresses based on the discussions among the teacher and students.
授業の方法
Students will be asked to prepare short presentations every few weeks. Those presentations will form the basis for our in-class discussions.
This class will be taught online using Zoom. In order to facilitate active discussions during class, students will need to be able to turn on their microphones during class. Students will also be welcome, though not required, to turn on their cameras when they are speaking.
成績評価方法
Please note that you are assessed on a Pass/Fail basis in this course.
Each student’s grade will be based on participation in class discussions, presentations given during class, and a final paper, which will be due a few weeks after the last class. The paper should focus on some aspect of an issue discussed in class.

No textbook will be used.
参考書
Students will be responsible for finding suitable references for their presentations and final paper.
履修上の注意
This class will be taught in English, and all discussions, presentations, and final papers should be in English.
Up to 20 students will be, in principle, allowed to register for this class. If more than 20 students are present for the first class, the instructor will make a selection. The criteria for the selection will be announced in that class.
