This course introduces students to critical and speculative approaches to design. Rather than treating design only as a way to solve problems, students will critically examine society and systems to form new perspectives, and rethink the assumptions that usually go unquestioned. The focus is on learning to construct critical questions and articulate thought-provoking prompts which are skills that are foundational for responsible research and decision-making.
The course is led by Miles Pennington, with contributions from UTokyo faculty members Prof. Daijiro Mizuno and Dana Karwas, bringing complementary expertise in speculative design and offering students a valuable opportunity to learn from a range of experienced teachers and perspectives.
--
Theme: To be discussed and agreed, based on the proposed subject of inquiry.
--
Objectives:
Design is not just about polished outputs or aesthetics. It is a way of discovering what matters, a language for collaboration, and a catalyst for imagining and building futures that do not yet exist. This course looks at how design can be used to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and help us see familiar things in a new way. Over the course you will look closely at everyday systems and the ideas we tend to take for granted, and learn to turn what you notice into clear, thought-provoking questions.
This course does not require a background in design. Working in small groups, you will try out approaches from critical and speculative design, and share and debate your work with the class. Along the way you will meet designers working at the forefront of the field, including a guest session with Tony Dunne and Fiona Raby.

授業計画
During this course you will: - Examine everyday systems and identify the assumptions underneath them - Recognize a range of critical approaches in design and what they are for - Construct critical questions and articulate them as thought-provoking prompts - Develop an imaginative design proposition, such as a concept, idea, intervention, product, service, or system, in response to the brief. - Give and receive feedback, and defend a position in open discussion - Reflect on how your own thinking changed
授業の方法
The class uses an active, project-based approach combining short lectures, practical exercises, discussion, and reflection. Students explore assumptions and imagine alternative futures through question forming, scenarios building, storytelling and lo-fi prototyping. Critiques and tutor feedback help students develop provocative ideas, consider their wider implications, and use design to question what the future could or should become.
成績評価方法
Student performance will be evaluated comprehensively based on assignments and project outputs, documentation and reflection on the learning process, presentation, and active participation in class discussions. Student performance will be evaluated based on the following criteria: -- Class Engagement: Active and responsible engagement in the learning process Presentation: Quality and coherence of outcomes and their communication Exercise (Class work): Ability to connect theory, practice, and values Reflection: Reflection on depth of exploration, experimentation, and iteration -- Grades descriptors: Excellent (A) Awarded for work that goes beyond standard completion to demonstrate truly outstanding performance. This includes original and well-developed questions, depth of critical thinking, and clear communication of ideas and process. Good (B) Awarded for solid and well-developed work that meets the course objectives. Work demonstrates clear understanding of the course's approaches, good collaboration, and effective communication, though may lack the depth, refinement, or originality of A-level work. Satisfactory (C) Awarded for work that meets the minimum requirements of the course. Basic engagement with the course's approaches is evident, but outcomes may be underdeveloped, inconsistent, or lacking in clarity, depth, or participation in discussion. Fail (D) Awarded where course requirements are not met. This may include insufficient participation, incomplete submissions, or a lack of engagement with the coursework. Grading Method: in accordance with University of Tokyo regulations, letter grades will be used.
履修上の注意
Who is this class for? This class is for anyone curious about questioning the systems and assumptions around them, imagining alternative futures, and using design and speculative design to explore how things could be different. It is suited to students who enjoy creative, hands-on, and interactive ways of learning. -- What do you need to join? All you need is curiosity and a willingness to question things that seem settled. No design background is required. A collaborative attitude matters too, since much of the course happens in small groups.
