The seminar introduces theoretical and empirical approaches to the study of insurgency and counterinsurgency, with a particular focus on historical changes in conceptual frameworks for understanding the phenomena of insurgency, and on how policy and strategic responses have been shaped by such conceptualization. The concept of warfare itself is examined.

b)In-depth knowledge of history of insurgency and counterinsurgency in the 20th and 21st centuries.
c)Ability to appraise competing theories and interpretations of the origin, concept and dynamics of insurgency, and effectiveness of counterinsurgency.
d) Ability to engage in policy debates concerning contemporary operations such as Iraq and Afghanistan.
e)Ability to use analytical skills and present independent research on topics in this area.
